Had a laptop doing nothing so decide to build a car pc from my E46.

IBM Thinkpad P4M 2ghz
1 GIG of Ram
120 GIG HDD
LinITX 7" touch screen.


Have been configuring the software:

Road Runner Front end
with Simplistique Skin.


Things to add:

Bluetooth for phone
GPS
WI FI aleady in just needs configuring.
Rear Camera

You need to update Flash ;)

Additionally - I would HIGHLY suggest you check out FreeICE - it's a really great, up-and-coming front end software!

Oh, and be sure to post up on Digital-Car too :)

Is there alternative viable ways to mounting the screen apart from on the dash? Always wanted to do a Car PC for the sake of it, but without cutting into dash.
 
Hmm, what about using a suction cup off the windscreen?

Basically, for the rare occassion I may go on a "road trip" (long weekend away) I want something for the missus to use.

Alternatively, it may be better to just let her use the Macbook charging off the DC and using 3G...

^ Awesome, looks like you are doing it right the first time. :) You may be able to take the keyboard off also, if you want to squeeze it into some small crevice. Also make sure you use a fuse between the battery and the DC-DC PSU. 10A should be plenty.

I did a car PC as my dissertation around 5 years ago, so if you've got any hardware woes, I've probably had some similar problem. There is a lot more hardware around now tho, which makes things easier.

FWIW, I ended up with a 10" screen in portrait... It just squeezed into a pug 205 dash!
 
Does look pretty nifty with the Logo sorted I must say. If you can get it mounted properly should be very nice.

Will keep an eye on this thread as could mount the screen straight into my dash as it can take a double din. Looks really good though, good luck :)
