Sequel to imo the best PC game I've ever played! I am in no way expecting this to remotely be as good but it's good to see details of the game.

The first thing gamers would want to know is that Mafia will not be a direct sequel to the first game. In fact, there won't have any connection with the first game at all. The story will begin shortly before the end of World War II.

Mafia 2 will have two main heroes: Vito and Joe. Although players will only be able to take the role of Vito, Joe will play an important part in the story. The story starts with Vito, who just came back from war duty at Europe.

The story will be set in a fictional city in America. Named Empire City, it will be twice as big as the Lost Heaven City from the first Mafia game. The map will cover around 10 square kilometers, with architecture inspired mostly by San Francisco and with colors and art style reminiscent of BioShock.

The game will have a Gears of War-type cover system. Money will be an important factor in the game; you'll need for things like buying clothes to escape pursuers and to visit restaurants. You'll also be able to stop at gas stations to refuel your car. You'll even be able to have your car washed.

There is still no specific release date. However, it was announced that the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 version will launch before the PC version does. The game is expected to ship in late Spring or Summer of 2009.

/me walks off with coat and head held low ............ :(

Head up fella. We've all been there at some point.

Thread back on track though. Mafia 2 should be interesting. I'm currently half way through playing the original Mafia on the PC and cannot help but think it is an amazing game considering it is about 5 or 6 years old. Mafia 2 has an awful lot to live up to.

360 before pc ***! :D

This looks like a good game. thought it was out at end of this year tho :/

I dunno, one of the things that made me really like it was its time period, this new one being in a less glamorous mafia period wont feel the same

My fav game ever so I'm not letting myself get excited about this one as no doubt it will be a dissapointment, gutted about a release date of next summer 09, as I thought it would be out this year :(

On the subject of not continuing the story, thank god, so that if mafia 2 stinks the original story still stands perfect

^True I guess. Tbh I was hoping it would continue, maybe through the eyes of Tommy's son...not sure where I got that from but it sounded good. Then again we don't want the original's superb story ruined so I guess a new game from the outset is good.

I don't really like the sound of a gears of war cover system though. Granted it would be an improvement on the original, which had finicky combat but I'm getting tired of seeing games adopt the 'cling to every sodding object' approach.

I hope Mafia 2 continues the trend of seeing the world evolve around you. In Mafia for instance the cars and clothing style changed as you progressed through the years, so towards the endgame we had uber high end cars :)

Oh and we need a Ralph clone!

I'm quietly hoping most games adopt the evolved version of that system seen in Drakes Fortune where cover is important, but its also sometimes necessary to get in the thick of it and run around very quickly shotgun blasting people (unlike gears where if you went out of cover you were much less mobile in comparison to drakes)
