Mafia 2 Details

In this day and age it'll be hard as hell to re-create the gameplay dynamics of Mafia 1 without going overboard and ruining it. Think it's safe to say Mafia 2 will be no where near as good and possibly underwhelming GTAIV style. That's why I'm not getting my hopes up.

What makes you think it's destiny is to be a rubbish game?

It does look like it will be a great game, however my biggest worries are:
* The game will feature 3 families.
* In several points in the story, you can make choices that affect the game.
* The game will feature multiple endings.
* You can take missions for and against competing families.
Those points might make the story a bit patchwork and not quite as good as the first game. I shall reserve final judgement until its released, but I do fear its going to become just a more serious version of GTA.

I can't wait for this. I am ashamed to say I never finished the first one. If I remember right my PC kept crashing when I was doing a certain mission. So I gave up :(

This looks great. I loved the first one, played it through 3 times! I loved following the invisible man around to unlock that very cool (and fast) red card with the white roof!

I'm not saying it'll be rubbish, I am just saying it won't be as good as the first. To produce something of Mafia 1's quality in this day and age is a hard feat. Back then devs weren't going OTT on GPU effects and the like that we see infesting todays drab titles. I mean look how far from GTAIV went from it's core formula.

Very true, it is always worth taking into consideration how much more time, money, effort and more money needs to be put into games these days. A comparison would be that for example, some character models in the upcoming Killzone 2 have more polygons than an entire level in the original killzone, that surely means the man-hours required to produce an entire level must be far greater than that of its predecessor.

The same applies to nearly much all games. It's because of this and the pressure that developers are under to produce a product that often results in poor quality game play with high quality graphics.

If it's even half as good as the first game it should be great!

Hope it's not too much of a sandbox game though - I do like a well scripted single player game.

game preview is up on Eurogamer.

I'm so excited about this game. The first is one of the best games i've ever played. I might go back to it as i never completed it. I got to the mansion stealth bit and kept dieing. Not sure how close to the end it was but probably not too far.

How could you say it is one of the best games you have ever played and not have completed it? :p

That said this game was all about the story which far too many games do not put enough effort in to. This is a PC game which I am genuinely excited about for a change. If this and Shenmue III came out on the same day, I think I would die of gaming pleasure on release day. :o

Release date set North America on August 24, 2010 and internationally on August 27

New York, NY – March 25, 2010 – 2K Games announced today that Mafia® II will be available in North America on August 24, 2010 and internationally on August 27, 2010 for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows PC. Mafia II is currently in development by 2K Czech, the same creative team behind the award-winning, genre-defining Mafia®, which captivated millions of gamers around the world.

Through a compelling narrative, Mafia II transports gamers into the dark and unforgiving world of the Mafia. The fiction is embellished by a sophisticated, era-evoking atmosphere that meticulously replicates the clothing, cars, music and advertising of 1940’s and 1950’s Americana. Players will easily become immersed in the game’s cinematic Hollywood-style experience with strong, believable characters in a living, breathing metropolis. By fusing high-octane gunplay with white-knuckle driving and an engaging narrative, Mafia II looks to be the industry’s most compelling Mafia title to date. According to IGN.com, “Mafia II is definitely at the top of our most wanted lists.”

Born the son of a poor immigrant, Vito is a beaten down Italian-American who is trying to escape the life of poverty that consumed his childhood. Vito, along with his lifelong friend, Joe, will descend into the world of organized crime. Looking to escape the life of hardship that his father led, Vito dreams about becoming a “made man,” and together with Joe, will work to prove themselves to the Mafia as they try to make their names on the streets. However, the two quickly realize that life as a wise guy isn’t quite as glamorous as it seems.

Additionally, Mafia II will be playable by the public for the first time at the Penny Arcade Expo East (PAX East) being held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts from March 26 – March 28 at the 2K Games booth (booth #103).

Mafia II is rated M for Mature by the ESRB. For more information on Mafia II, please visit www.mafia2game.com.
