OcUK X1950Pro 512MB... D.O.A

My powersupply is a Seasonic S12 430W, the same guys who make the current Corsair PSU's. More than good enough for a 2180 at stock, 1GB RAM (I have 4GB but I tested with only one in) and an X1950pro (supposably low power if the blurb on ocuk website is to be believed). Only one hard drive too, and a DVD drive.

Plus if it was my power supply then it either wouldn't post/boot at all or it would boot up and then blue screen all the time.

I got the same card and had problems getting it to work with my 400W PSU. PC booted, displayed the starting bit e.g boot from CD.... etc. and then did little else.

I upgraded my PSU to a 530W with 2 12v rails of 18a (following advice from here :)) and that did the trick.

Just to be clear, it doesn't show ANYTHING on screen, I just know the computer is booting in the background because of the hard drives making noises, the lights on the keyboard flashing once etc. So I don't think that's the same as what's happening to others? My PSU have 14A on one rail and 15A on the other, so a combined 29A. Surely that's enough?

Psu mate, it can happen that the computer loads but nothing is on the screen. Happened to me a few times with old psu, everything fixed when i got my corsair 620w psu. The rails are not together btw on ** psu its combined total of what psu can do yes perhaps but the pci-e leads will be using one or the other rail so its either getting 14a or 15a only. Which isnt enough im afraid.

Well that sucks. Looks like new PSU time :( . Shame really as this one is totally silent and there is nothing actually wrong with it!

Think I'll go for a Corsair 520W, should be more than good enough I'd have thought? Won't be needing any more power any time soon so 620W is probably too much.

As a side note, what coolers fit these cards? Need something silent as my Zalman VF900 won't fit, the holes are too far apart.

My powersupply is a Seasonic S12 430W.

Should run fine with that considering in recent weeks ive put a couple of 1950's in PC's with 430w Seasonic units.

Edit: One spec i can recall was as follows -

Athlon 4200+ (@ 2.75)
Gigabyte Mobo
2GB Mem
X1950Pro 512mb
x2 HDrive's
DVD-RW
Few 120mm fans, etc etc

You do not need a new PSU, that PSU is more than capable.

Make sure you have connected the 4pin +12v connector that comes out of the PSU and connects into the motherboard.

I thought it should be capable. Thanks for an example Sean_UK, this system should be pulling less than that spec if anything!

stickroad, which 4pin do you mean? I have an 8pin on this PSU if that's the connector you're talking about. Unless I've missed one. Will check now..

4 pin goes to mobo, 6 pin pci-e to gfx card, both must be attached for things to work. ;) Not suggesting idiot btw if going by level of posts here, but you did ask what 4 pin.

Well this board has an 8 pin connector which can have just a 4pin plugged in if your PSU doesn't have the 8pin (it even comes as standard with a blanking plate over 4 of them). I have the 8pin plugged in, a standard molex which goes straight into the board and yes, I had the 6pin PCI-E connector in too (but that was from an adapter coming from 2 molex, tried both from one lead and from seperate leads.. made no difference).

Number of posts means naff all, I haven't upgraded my PC for about 2 years prior to this :) .

Unfortunately none of my mates have PCI-E. All older systems with AGP :( . I think I'll give the card another try with the molex's on various different leads in different combinations to check (there are 3) before I RMA... but I'm not too hopeful for it working.

You have a molex to pci-e adapter? If so thats what i tryed to use with my akasa paxpower 400w psu and had the problems you described tho it did display things half the time. Soon as i got a psu with enough juice to last for this build of pc and next and has dedicated pci-e leads then it worked a treat.

Infact have a pic floating about on my Hdrive of bros set up, again simular spec to one i mentiond earlyer (Asus X1950pro in his) and sporting the very same 430w Seasonic unit. He's had that set up for a while now and reason for 430w purchase back at the time was cracking value iirc, dought it will make the trip into the next build i do him though >

Why's everyone immediately saying that his PSU isn't up to it? That's a quality PSU and should be easily up to powering that spec.

IMO the card is just dead.
