AMD RAM DISKS

Lol, you beat me to it, read the artical, going to give it ago. AMD say that even SSD's will benefit from a RAMDISK "With SSDs all-the-rage right now, the extra speed offered by RAMDisks may seem unnecessary, however, there are very real advantages to adopting a RAMDisk:"

•Keep temporary files and saves off the SSD - extending drive life
•SSDs can dump data into RAM at incredible speeds, reducing the time it takes to prepare a RAMDisk after boot

If there was a decent safety mechanism (backup) and it was all pretty much transparent, they would be fine... but you can't really go without permanent storage.. ram is just too risky really (And I've always liked the idea of RAM Disks).

This is in the quick start guide:

SECURE STORAGE – If you are using your RAMDisk as a place to store specific files and applications for future use, you may wish to save your disk image. If your RAMDisk is running, make sure you copy any files to your hard drive before you stop your disk.
o Select Stop RAMDisk, select Save Disk Image on Shutdown from the Load/Save tab and then Start RAMDisk for changes to take effect.

Not a real time failsafe admittedly, but you could probably fashion something by way of script of file copy utility in task scheduler. That said, if you were using the ram disk for gaming, little changes on a lot of installations and files are saved in My Docs or the Cloud for saves...

I see what you're getting at though, it's just like copying stuff to /tmp on a *nix box if it doesn't persist a reboot.

I use DataRam, as it offers you the option to back up the ramdisk to a hard drive.

Also see this thread. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18395046&highlight=ramdisk

Use to run pc with 32gb memory split 16gb/16gb for pc & ramdisk, also used 12gb/20gb, on my htpc I have 12gb memory split 6gb/6gb for pc & ramdisk, avoids buffering when copying, timeshifting, etc.
