Right guys, i live fairly out in the sticks not many street lights where i am, surrounded by fields and woods and moors, and iv got about 10 little led torches laying around that are ether broke, not very bright or useless, i end up using the led on my iphone.

I need a new torch!

Im looking for a torch thats bright enough to make a beam and brighten anything up no matter how far away if possible haha.

Im not very clued up about lumens and how brights 1 million candle light? has anyone actually got a million candles and tried it :S haha, so i got nothing to compare that to really..

Any help would be great! thanks

Night vision goggles! Torches are terrible, they make you blind to anything that isn't in the beam and they gives you away to boot. Much better to get used to the dark, not that it really ever gets pitch black.

I did a fair bit of torch research in the past, of which I can't remember much of it.

But just keep a few things in mind: LED's are bright, but unless focused don't have much throw (the beam doesn't actually reach very far) as they tend to scatter the light out all over the place.

Also, some of these "torches" get so big, and heavy, that they aren't really usable for walking with.

So with that in mind a few follow up questions:

1) How long do you need the charge to last/how long will your walk be?

2) Do you have a budget? These torches can get very expensive.

3) Will it just be you using it? In other words, does it have to manageable by kids as well?

4) What will you be using it for? Heavy torches aren't comfortable to use to just illuminate your way, but if your searching for things the practicality of a heavy torch (the majority of the weight is usually in the battery - bigger battery, more power/throw/life) outweighs its handling issues.

Oh god, well scrub some of those questions, if not all of them. This post got a lot longer while I was typing that! :D

Wouldn't a head torch be easier to use? An Alpkit Gamma is great and only 15 quid.
This, having done countless night hikes myself walking longer periods of time having to hold and point a torch gets old fast, get a headlamp and be done with it.
