So i just re-watched Underworld and Underworld Evolution....(SPOILERS)

I've gotta say I'm astonished. I really forgot how good these films really are.

Where to start?

Cast

Kate Beckinsale is the quite clearly the star who fulfills her role brilliantly, but lets not forget the other big names who also put in top end performances such as

Michael Sheen as Lucian
Bill Nighy as Victor
Scott Speedman as Michael
Sophia Myles as Erika
Shane Brolly as Kraven
Tony Curran as Marcus
Derek Jacobi as Corvinus

Stunts.

Kate decided that she wanted to do most of the stunts herself and therefore worked very closely with a stunt team for weeks perfecting her moves. You only need to watch the film to see what a great job she does.

Scott Speedman also spent 3 weeks with the stunt team rehearsing for his final showdown in Underworld with Victor.

Throughout, the fight scenes are choreographed to perfection and the final showdown in Underworld Evolution is probably my favorite action sequence in the history of cinema(yes I'd really go that far). The is purely down to the way the protagonists/antagonists have been built up towards the final showdown, which does not disappoint.

Another brilliant scene is the one in which Marcus is pursuing Kate and Michael on the truck.

Locations

Locations are so beautiful and the set design went a long way to compliment it.

The Animation is phenomenal

The Warewolves each require 4 men to control. These are not CGI guys, they are genuine models. With regards to animation I can't comment much as I lack experience in the field. I filmed the animation show at my University the other week and found out that not one shot from Sweeney Todd was shot outside, 100% animated from the studio. Unbelievable.

Protagonists/Antagonists

Some of the coolest in film?

Antagonists

Marcus = Vampire with wings (model work is fantastic!)

Lucian = Head Werewolf

Victor = Head Vampire

William = First Werewolf

Protagonists

Selene played by Kate = Vampire, later betrayed.
Michael = Hybrid and descendant of Corvinus 50% Vampire 50% Lycan

The CGI is somewhat, believable.

When the helicopter crashes into the location where the final showdown between Selene, Michael, William and Marcus (When he is shredded by the helicopter rotor)

Strong endings

Both films conclude very very well, in particularly Evolution thanks to the showdown at the end.

Original and innovate plot.

This isn't your normal vampire movie, in which the vampires are killed by a steak to the heart. I loved the way Kate changed to become mutual (neither supporting vampires or werewolves) after she found out Victor assassinated her family and it was in fact vampires that started the war.

Post Production ties it all up.

Everything from the transitions to the color correction was done (looks for a new adjective) stupendously! :D

Enough said :)

To conclude, I don't feel as it these films get the acclaim they deserve, an absolutely brilliant accolade and one I'd highly recommend you all re-watch!

I haven't seen the 3rd but I''m so disappointed Kate isn't in it :(

Sums it up ;)

Seriously thought the first 2 are really good films, Victor and Lucian make it really. The prequel sucks though, don't bother with it. Overall it does have a somewhat poor mans Blade feel to it though. I hope they hurry up and do the third one to wrap up the story though :)

Ah i didn't even realise that the '3rd' was a prequel.

Poor man's blade? I much preferred Underworld and I'd take Kate over Wesley any day :p

Interesting points.
I did enjoy the films when they came out in the cinema, but havent seen them since.

Think im going to have to give them another watch.

This trilogy might not be perfect, but I do like that they try make an effort to put a new spin on the whole Werewolves vs Vampires story though.

I wouldn't even call this a poor man's Blade seeing as they both obviously do things differently and not even related. Blade was already based upon a Marvel Comics character whereas Underworld did it's own thing by creating a whole new universe and setting.

I didn't think Rise of the Lycans was bad at all. It really changed the way you feel about the Lycans and helped to establish the storyline that carried over to the first movies. As far as prequels go, this one is in the top of the class.

Great to hear :) I look forward to seeing it. If they release a third (4th, whatever) and its good this will be a very good boxset to pick up on Blueray in the future :)

The only good thing about the prequel was seeing more of Lucian. The story was entirely boring as you already knew which characters were going to live and die. The girl they got to be Kate 2 was pretty crap, Sonja was blonde in Underworld 1 but it feels like they just tried to get an actress that looks similar to her to draw the crowds.

The worst thing about the prequel was it was entirely pointless, it just dragged out what we'd already seen in Underworld 1 into an entire film. It's nowhere near the quality of the other two.

Apparently it was originally intended to be a trilogy (not including the prequel) and Kate has agreed to do all three. I assume the final one will explain the revelation at the end of the second. Not quite sure where they're going to get a bad guy from, feels like they've killed them all!

Good point lol, it ended saying that there is still a lot anarchy between the Lycans and the Vampires but seeing as they have no leaders surely you'd expect Selena to reveal the truth an demand a truce? Then again, they both need blood ;)

I think she is still predominantly a vampire but has certain lycan traits (such as being able to survive sunlight)

Victor bit Selana = 100% vampire

Corvinus is father to Marcus and William, Marcus is vampire (or is he hybrid?) and William is Lycan

Seeing as Selena took Corvinus's blood i guess that makes selena

75% vampire 25% lycan.

Confusing :(

Marcus is a hybrid. He was turned when he was woken with that werewolves blood at the end of the first.

Corvinus is something different though, so maybe his blood will give her something different to both, who knows. Hope we find out soon :)

Yeah Selene is a hybrid, but based on the original Alexander Corvinus immortality. Rather than a Lycan/Vampire hybrid. So more like an enhanced Vampire.

Just that, the oldest strongest blood with no mutation but immortality. She had the bat mutation from Viktor, so she ends up a super-boosted vampire.
