Refuse to buy a 1070 at current pricing

Oooops I meant June 30th. :)

Also we force no one to pre-order with us and pre-order we have operated in the same method for past 15 years, payment is taken up front to secure the position in the queue.

Not taking payment and then charging the card when stock arrive which can be several weeks later causes a lot more issues due to payment issues.

Also at the time we use ETAs provided to ourselves, if the ETA moves it is unfortunately out of our control. We hope by June 30th some custom cards will actually start being in free stock.

It is also not EVGA's fault if they have run into a manufacturing issue with FTW which causes a delay, it is out of their hands and all they can do is try to get back on track as soon as possible.

If I place a pre-order now will I be able to cancel it? For instance if stock is delayed and another card is in stock.

The only way to be smart and patient is to buy last gen at half price off eBay.

Buying an xx80ti? Guess what! The xx80 is 9-12 months down the line! Oh you're buying that one now instead? Guess what! The xx80ti is 9-12 months down the line. It's a repeating cycle.

Is buying second hand off Ebay a good idea?

You don't even know if that stuff works and more than likely won't have warranty and no returns. Doesn't feel very sensible to me.

What i'm wondering if the prices of the 1080 and 1070 are due to shortages of chips or are nvidia rationing chips to custom manufacturers knowing they'll sell at this price better that way.

We have little movement in the price now due to GBP weakening, so any major price move down would have to come from NVIDIA and I cannot see them making a price move any time soon considering stock is selling out like crazy, we have thousands of back orders across 1070 and 1080.

Thanks for the information. In that case I don't for see the price changing too greatly for the foreseeable.

There is obviously risk involved in buying second hand.

Ebay is pretty good for this though. If the title and description of the item imply and state that the item is in good working order without any faults and it doesn't work when it arrives, you'll get your money back. Especially if you pay via PayPal.

Of course there's the point about not having warranty and no returns as well.

any salesmen will tell you everything is selling well.its their job to do so.

remember these cards are the 970 gtx replacement and 980 gtx replacement. the 970 gtx sold over a million cards alone.

the price will change.the will drop soon.if you dont believe that well there is nothing to be said.

the 1070 gtx wont sell as many units as the 970 gtx neither will the 1080gtx.

you have already seen the pricing arguments. factor in the 970 and 980 gtx play everything at the ranges they sit in also means the prices have to go down to sell the units.

1080 has already outsold 970 on the same time period. Not bad considering it cost double.

Don't take my word for it, read the threads of customers stating their position in the queue it is quite easy to see we have pre-sold 1000's of custom cards, then add on top the sales of the FE editions and you can very quickly see that already we have sold close to 5000 1080 cards.

1070 is slower yes, due to customers being shocked at the price, most were expecting it cost less, even I was but the cost unfortunately increased days prior to launch. However 1070 is now beginning to accelerate, but is still behind 970 sales.

But 1080 sales are incredible!

Personally I'm fine wih Nvidia charging whatever they can for their products (I was a technical sales person for over 20 years) what i can't stomach and what has stopped me upgrading is the insidious $=£ pricing we're seeing. Someone is pocketing a ton of money from this and I don't feel like adding to their stash. I'm seriously thinking of holding out to September and picking up a 1080 from the US on my next trip. If this sort of thing carries on we're goign to see a rise in the grey market such as you get with consumer electric goods (or the early days Bluray days for those who can remember that).

It's almost a moot point arguing the price of things you have no control over. Also as Gibbo has eluded to, the 10XX range is selling well, so the people are voting with their wallets and obviously happy to pay the price set.

I agree it would be nice if there was no yearly price hike on new products but there is and always be.

The 1080 is the fastest single GPU consumer card across a wide range of tests no ifs no buts.

If you want to call it 'mid range' now I expect you assume it should have a 'mid range' price to match lets say roughly 300 pounds. Now the Titan and Ti 'top end' variants would sell for around 600-800 pounds? makes sense so far?

..... No its totally ridiculous if NVIDIA pursued a market strategy like this it would cost them $$$$'s.

Why? Well it makes sense to come to market with a smaller die for a new process as yields are likely to be better on a smaller process and you can churn out more volume whilst refining the manufacturing process for a bigger die to follow in more limited quantities down the road. The smaller die product generally slightly outperforms the 'big' die product from the previous gen in this pattern historically. As the small die product is made in greater quantities and comes first it makes sense to try and recoup a lot of the cost of the R+D on it as GPU's are very expensive to develop and have a very limited shelf life for sales you can then afford to reduce the 'R+D' component in the price for the bigger GPU product down the line to make the most of your investment into the process.

Most of the end consumer cost of a GPU like the 1080 is to recoup R+D costs not to recoup manufacturing costs much like CPU's!

Now if NVIDIA charged 300 pounds for their 'mid range' cards as you call them and 600- 800 pounds for their 'high end' cards what would actually happen to the GPU market and consumer buying habits?

People smart with money would very quickly stop buying the 'high end' cards and just skip to the first release 'mid range' cards saving a bundle every generation whilst drastically reducing the demand for the 'high end' products as a result. Now obviously this would drastically effect NVIDIA's turnover (negatively) making the whole idea a non starter.

Judge GPU's by their PERFORMANCE not their die size or memory bandwidth because guess what after the Titan (whatever) and 1080Ti there will probably be a faster 1180GTX with a 'mid range' GPU to boot but which will probably outperform the Titan (whatever) and 1080Ti !!

i do judge gpus by their performance that's why i will buy a 1080ti,and if i needed a card right now i would already have bought a 1080.:)

I agree I put the wrong their / they're / there in the sentance but if you break up the other part then it does make sense actually. Nvidia know there fans are not smart is gramatically fine?

Oh well, maybe I'm wrong :p Still, I'll take the opportunity to say I'm being relatively critical here on Nvidia but it's more a clinical criticism, an analytical observation and not an emotional one. I'm sure some will disagree but just saying I hope people don't start getting offended and argumentative. I always make typo's when rushing too :p

I have to admit I agree with pretty much most of what you have said.

But on the other hand you can't really blame Nvidia as there is zero competition at the moment.

They are just taking advantage of the situation and the gullible with more money than sense.

Companies are around to make as much money as they can, not do anybody any favours.

If they can sell the products at grossly inflated prices then they will.

If people refuse to pay the asking price, it will eventually come down. They can't sit on unsold stock for too long.

There are plenty of people who must have the latest shiny toy straight away though, whatever the cost, and nvidia know this.

Don't like the price? Then don't buy the product. Simple.

I'd suspect people will be shelling out an average of £800 for the 1080Ti.

1070 £400
1080 £600
1080Ti £800
Titan £1000

you will be paying the same as the 1080 pricing now.its just the cards that are out now will drop into the correct pricing bracket.

so a 1080 will start from £400 £1070 start from £300. 1080ti start from £600.

Better buy now folks because if we BREXIT then the pound is going down to equal parity against the dolla and a 1080 will cost a million pounds. Well, probably £700....

Not that I would try to make people panic buy or anything...........for a laugh :D
