The Xeon 32xx Quad Core Overclocking Thread...

Im gonna wait till the zalman reserator xt comes out,

i know the previous incarnations were not too hot (excuse the pun) when it came to overclocked cpus, but did love the res 1 i used to have.

Got it running at 2.666 (333x8) at 1.275v in bios (pretty sure its that cpuz is showing 1.232 right now)

Left it at full load last night, cpu test on Orphos on the first 2 cores, and rendering a series of 1000 images all at 1920x1200 in 3dsmax on the other 2 cores.

Temps were maxing out at 70 with the fans at at a guess, around 8v I imagine (half way on my controller goes 5-12v)

Blue screened over night with a memory error, must have been after about 12 hours of full load looking at how many images have rendered (266 1920x1200 tga files! - 2.28GB :p)

Really need to get myself some better ram, this stuff can barely go past stock speeds. Was hoping 833MHz at 5-5-5-15 and 2v would have worked.....

Voltage is too low, raise it to 2.2-2.4v. :)

Really? The ram is only meant to be running at 1.8 :/

Going any higher than 2v on my board shows the numbers up as red, so I presumed I didn't want to go that high.

Still not used to DDR2 ram. I miss DDR1 !

For the meantime I've just run it on the lowest divider, will leave it testing overnight again and check the cpu is stable.

It's fine dont worry, the board manufacturers will always warn you but many run 2.2v-2.4v 24/7, including me. :)

Got a new heatsink from the MM (Cheers Slackworth!)

Just mounted it to see how it does.

Loading all 4 cores at the moment at 340x8 (2.72GHz) load temps are around 55! (that temp is with the side off, put it on and its slowly crept up to just over 60 degrees.
Either the Titan Vanessa is a far far better cooler than the Zalman 9500 or I did a really really shoddy job of fitting it when I first got my quad, most likely I was too eager to see how fast it was!

Time to push for a stable 3GHz now :D

i have an X3210 and i have ordered the zalman 9700, hopefully to get a stable overclock of around 2.8ghz. I had another type of zalman before (fatal1ty cn77 or something) and at that speed it would creep up to 80c or higher in TAT! Do you guys think the zalman 9700 will provide a better solution?

I plumped for that based on plenty of good reviews on various e-tailers websites from satisfied customers, plus there is a general consensus that it goes well with the case i have (Antec 900) when aligned upwards, due to the massive exhaust fan on the top. I certainly hope it does a better job!

The 9700 should do a much better job. Reviews suggest it is one of the best coolers out.
my Zalman 9500 should have done a good job, it was only because I mounted it so badly that temps would go so high I think. Probs had poor AS5 contact.

Why is that?

Always seems to do pretty well in reviews I've seen.

It's not as good as the Tuniq, Noctua, Ultra-120... so I see no point buying it really. Why buy something that isn't the best for your money, especially when you can't customise the fan?

Will post up my experience later on, need to organise my stuff for A level revision first though. :p

Going to move from the evga 680 r2 to the asus p35 as well :)

Well I will post my temps once i have fitted the zalman 9700, aslong as it can manage to keep my processors cores from melting at 2.8ghz then i wont be too dissapointed :)

Nice Thread! :)

Could do with a few more screenshots though. Everyone seems to be getting on fine with their new chips and it seems that 60°C is the average max load temp which I think is great considering the extra cores!

If your gonna stick with aircooling you really ought to be using a Thermalright heatsink! :p

I was really bored so I made your sig into a smaller size. Yours is over the 20kb limit so replace it with this:
