4GHz i7 920 D0, but only on 19x

i can only hit 4GHz but using 211 x 19 and running the ram underclocked. got a few days off work starting sat so will have more time to play, but wondered if anyone had any ideas whats going on.
 
Have you tried running 21x191? Also, what are your voltage settings, ie cpu vcore, qpi and ram?

nope coz im not too sure whats safe to go to. i havent done any serious overclocking for years so dont really know whats the best settings to go for, and whats 'safe' max voltages.
 
Max reccomended for qpi is 1.35, currently running 1.3125 here, though i may try lowering it back to 1.300. I thought i was having stability issues in intel burn test, turned out to be a fault in the program, by then i had upped qpi and started using LinX so im gonna try dropping qpi down again.

ok cheers will try playing with those figures.
i only use OCCT as when i had my Q8300 intelburn seemed to show it was stable, but OCCT kept failing, so lost confidence in intelburn. not sure if OCCT is a good enough test, but have been playing fifa 2010 and NFS:Shift all evening and no issues thus far.

You're not supposed to just set it at any fixed setting, you should be testing by increasing one step/notch at a time:o, that is one of the main principals of overclocking afterall.

My QPI is at 1.455 so you have some head room yet

NOTE: don't just put yours to 1.455 for 2 reasons
1. I have RAM that needs around 1.9v and the QPI needs to be within .5v
2. You just should't do that.

i had the same setup (different ram but mine was quicker) so i used their settings and tweaked them. i have been going up and down on the vcore as i know that 1.35 is pretty much the max you want to go, likewise with other settings i have read whats a safe figure to max at. but there are still some settings i am not sure on, still a big learning curve, but dont want to keep upping it bit by bit if i have reached my max oc and end up killing something.
my ram is 1.65v, so does that mean i can only go to 1.1v?

No it means that if your QPI is 1.275 then your max RAM volts "should be" no more than 1.775v
If the max QPI is 1.35 as setter says then the highest RAM you'd want to go is 1.85v, not that you need it as your RAM only needs 1.65v
 
sorry struggling to get my head around it, so if my ram says it should be 1.65v, what can i go up to for the QPI? or is there not ratio, i think im confusing myself now.

If you want to be safe then stay at 1.35v or lower.
staying within 0.5v of 1.65v is 1.15>1.65v

If the volts and timings are set at the reccomended settings and the speed is 1600MHz or lower, then I doubt its your RAM,
like I said before you probably need to tweak the QPI as it's what I had to do to get it Prime stable at 4GHz, having it at 200x21 was not stable for me and the time I wanted to spend tweaking it, as I wanted to get some gaming done on it and I was happy at 4GHz so there it stays. :)
