4GHz i7 920 D0, but only on 19x

There's a lot of information on the UD5 with corsair 1600mhz ram [thread="18085288"]here[/thread] which you may find useful. Sadly the motherboard in question is currently on rma for the lan ports dying, so it won't be updated for a while. Applicable to 12gb rather than 6, but the only big difference between the two seems to be qpi voltage (you won't need as much as me) and pci-e frequency, which you shouldn't need to take over 100.

paradisiac still waiting for your assistance please mate :)

not sure what the lights mean, will look in my manual tomorrow. as for overclocking, whats you target clock? i wanted 4GHz or as close as i could get, so having to go to 19x to achieve this to me isnt a problem as longs as i dont loose anything by having a low multiplier.
did you have it stable at 3.8GHz?

well I ran prime 95 for 4 hrs and it was no errors. so I guess so but I freaked out that the voltages may be to high..

I had my qpi on auto my vdimm on 1.66v my vcore at 1.27500 but I got worried that these volts may be too high for my use as I usually leave my pc on to download things for maybe 15hrs a day and did not want the pc to burn out or cause a fire if it was too many volts.. lol I dunno I got a little worried when electricity came into it (volts and stuff lol) would you say these settings are safe? some people said you should set the qpi to manual but what should it be ?

Also If I did overclock to 3.8 will there be much more electricity consumed and my bills being much higher or is it not so much the case? thanks

aslong as you leave speedstep on, then it wont be running at the 3.8GHz all the time its on, infact, it will run that hardly ever if you are mainly downloading. as for the vcore being too high, you are good up to 1.34 vcore i believe, so below that is good, i got mine down to 1.200 vcore @ 3.7GHz. the ram should be fine aslong as its not over the sticker voltage. not 100% sure on the qpi myself so i went with what someone else had done on their setup, but will have a bit of a play as i have 9 days holiday now.
from the settings you have said there isnt anything that would worry me, and as for the electric bills, like i said, with speedstep on it shouldnt make any difference from stock settings and 3.8GHz unless you are doing something cpu intensive, which downloading wont be.

thanks for your help.. what cpu multiplier ddid you use? and also my cpy voltage shows.0.9-1.1 when I load CPU-Z on stock settings.. so If I overclock to 3.8GHZ what should my vcore be.. I mean ..

Shall I do multiplier of 21 x turbo enabled with 181 bclk?

thanks

my 3.7GHz settings were :

CPU Clok ratio 19x
QPI Link speed x36 (7.2GHz)
Baseclock 195
Performance Enhance - standard
XMP disabled
System memory multiplyer SPD - 6.0
Memory frequency - 1200MHz
intel turbo boost - disabled
Cpu cores enabled - all
CPU multithreading - enabled
C1e , C3/c6/c7, thermal, EIST and PROCHOT all disabled
Virtualization - enabled.
Uncore freqency x13 (2600MHz)
Isochronous supprot - enabled
PCI frequency - 100
CIAZ -disabled
CPU clockdrive 800Mv
PIC Express clock drive 900Mc
CPU cliock skew 100ps
IOH clock skew 0p

Local-line calibration - disabled
CPU Vcore 1.200V
QPI/VTT coltage 1.295v
IOH Core 1.16V
DRAM Voltage 1.640v

like i said though, some of those settings i got from someone else so i dont know if i could change something for the better, but it got me stable at reasonable temps too.

I see thanks .. is there a problem if I leave my QPI Link speed on auto?

I will probably start off with something like this:
CPU Clok ratio 21x
QPI Link speed x36 (7.2GHz)
Baseclock 181
Performance Enhance - Turbo
XMP disabled
System memory multiplyer SPD - 8.0
Memory frequency - 1533MHz
intel turbo boost - enabled
Cpu cores enabled - all
CPU multithreading - enabled
C1e , C3/c6/c7, thermal, EIST and PROCHOT all disabled (but will enable all but C3/c6/c7 after the overclock is stable)
Virtualization - enabled.
Uncore freqency x13 (2600MHz)
Isochronous supprot - enabled
PCI frequency - 100
CIAZ -disabled
CPU clockdrive 800Mv
PIC Express clock drive 900Mc
CPU cliock skew 100ps
IOH clock skew 0p

Local-line calibration - disabled
CPU Vcore 1.200V
QPI/VTT coltage 1.295v
IOH Core 1.16V
DRAM Voltage 1.640v

the uncore freq will have to be x17. other than that its a base to start from. not sure, cant see leaving qpi on auto will do any harm, so unless it becomes unstable then leave it at that.

why does it have to be at x1 I don't get that part .. please can you explain.. thanks :) and If I dont want to leave qpi on auto what shall i set it as? x36?

also shall I manuall set my ram timings to 9-9-9-24 or leave them on auto which I think is 8-8-8-20

uncore freq = (System memory multiplyer SPD x 2) + 1
so
uncore freq = (8 x 2) + 1
which is 17 :)
the ram i would set manually, if you can get it stable and want to tweak it a bit then thats the time, but get the cpu side stable first.

someone elses settings.

i use OCCT and left that for an 8hour overnight job on 3.7GHz, have only done a 45min test @ 4GHz as i only recently changed the settings and havent had chance.

well I am going to do a 4.0GHZ too.. lol no point of buying all this gear and not overclocking it so be it :)

I am going for these settings:

multiplier 21 x
bclk 191
ram timings 9-9-9-24
turbo enabled
I will disable eist c1/c6.. and all that whilst overclocking then enable after stable.
vcore starting point will be 1.2 and work my way up
CPU Vcore 1.200V and maybe more depends if its steady..
QPI/VTT coltage 1.295v
IOH Core 1.16V
DRAM Voltage 1.640v

lets say I need to up the voltage.. which voltage do I need to go for the vcore or the qpi ? and also how do I know if the vdimm has enough volts on 1.64?

Thanks

the dram (vdimm) should be as stated or as close to, the number on the sticker on the ram. the only one that needs to change is the vcore, i would start at 1.3 and go down, rather than going up, that way you will know all the other settings are stable, if you start low and try to go up, it could be something else making it crash and you will miss you vcore min limit.
