Make up my mind - X1900XT-X or 7900GTX

Finally got the wedge to get one of these cards. They system I have is from work so didn't cost me anything but is an Intel box. Pretty decent though for a freebie - Intel 945P chipset, 3.4 Presler with 4megs cache, 500gig sata2, 2gigs DDR2 667, Xi-Fi Extreme etc.. Unfortunatley the video card isn't up to much in latest games (X600). Also the psu is actually only a 375w model, however the amps are very good on it, and in fact you can now buy my setup from same company with a 1900xt-x, which means it's been tested and approved.

So the question is do I buy a 1900xt-x as it's cheaper then a 7900gtx, has more shaders so should run shader intensive games better I suppose, and runs Oblivion slightly faster and then there is hdr+aa, and better IQ. Or do I spend extra and get a 7900gtx which runs quieter/cooler so my psu won't be under as much load, and still have enough juice for a physx card later. Also, what 7900gtx should I go for. Will the cheapest ones overclock to the same level as some of the more expensive XFX models. Or should I hold out for an XFX overclocked verison, although I remember one or two people who had heavily overclocked 7800 XFX's and they artifacted in 3dmark somewhat, so maybe better to play it safe and stick with the OcUK version.

The X1900XT-X will perform better in most games at higher resolutions, especially with AA and AF enabled, and has better IQ in general. Other than that they're pretty much the same, so it really just comes down to price.

Personally, I'd go with an X1900XT. With the X1900XT-X you're paying £50+ for an extra 25mHz core and an extra "X" on the box.

Loads of similar threads about - have a gander.
You seem to know the pros and cons of each option - so just make a choice :)

Yeah x1900 XT, clocked to XTX, and also able to have AA+HDR on at the same time in games like Oblivion, which Nvidia can't do, also x1900 is cheaper, just uses more power, and generates more heat than the GTX. :)

Say no more, this sums it up pretty perfectly.

Also, with the £50+ you'd save buying an XT instead of an XT-X, you could stick a Zalman VF900-CU on it and still have tons of change left over, so no need to worry about heat and noise. Even then it costs a fortune less than a 7900GTX.

Good point. :D

Hmmm...I have been reading reviews now. And so far on vr-zone and xbitlabs the 7900gtx came out ahead at 1280 and 1600 with 4x AA/16xAF. It was faster in Quake4,Doom3,HL2:Lost coast, pretty much tied in COD2 and BF2, and only lost out in Oblivion. Anandtech shows a closer battle, but the 7900gtx comes out ahead in most games, if ever so slightly.

I know the ati is supposed to have better image quality and can run HDR/AA at the same time but I am thinking this trade off is worth it for less noise/power consumption which is important to me, and still be as fast or possibly faster then the ati in current games.

Get the 7900GTX!!!!!!!!!one Its 60c cooler and only needs a 50w psu!!!!!!one

On a more serious note - get the X1900. Why?

1.) Performance is superior in popular games like oblivion, FEAR and COD2. But if you don't play these games then this point is mute.

2.) It has the ability to run HDR and AA with good framerates.

In oblivion the 7900gtx is about 4fps slower than the x1900xtx. This is the EXACT same framerate hit that you get when applying HDR and AA. So its like having a 7900 with free HDR or decent boost without it.

3.) It will run on most branded 480+ PSU's.

4.) While being loud on boot up - when idle it is silent and while gaming its only just audible. But if your case is badly vented then it can become a tad loud in some cases.

5.) Contrary to what some people say - it actually runs the same (temperature wise) to x800's and 6800's. The stock cooler is just a little bit better to compensate for the extra heat output.

The difference is just not enough to justify the very large difference in ££££££ IMO
Just think of all the games you could buy with all that cash ;)

Have you seen reviews on the newer ATI drivers? There are marked performance increases from the cat 6.2's and up. Always compare reviews using the latest drivers (goes for NV too).

And I tend to trust firingsquad better than any other reviews. They convinced me to get the 7800 512mb when it came out - but stock ran out so I held out and they convinced me to get the x1900xt. They give a much clearer picture and better overall summary I think.

7900GTX, cooler, quieter, just as good if not better overall.

I've had nothing but trouble with ATi's drivers lately, and they ARE loud, contrary to what many people say.
