Help me chose some tyres

OK, I'll be needing 4 new tyres pretty soon, rears because they are almost slick, and fronts because the previous owner thought it would be a good idea to fit some 'champiros' :rolleyes:

Fronts are 225/45/17
Rears are 255/40/17

I was all set on getting some Eagle F1 GSD3's, @ £125 each for the rears, £106 each for the fronts, fully fitted from etyres.

The cheese sidewall thing has got me thinking though :(

Any other suggestions for similar money?

I think I remember reading that the Bridgestone RE050 A's were pretty good too.

If you order from eTyres, email me before you do. *Might* be able to get a bit of a discount...
 
what do you want, soft and sticky rubber that'll need changing in 3000 miles or something to last a bit longer and get that back end out a bit more :D

Conti N1's had been great for me, but I got like 4k miles out of all 4 :(

the N2's are a lot better for wear and only a little less for grip, had 10k out of them so far and they look like they are only just worn in.

They come in at almost £40 a corner more expensive :eek:

Toyo Proxes T1-R and T1-S are very similarly priced, £124 and £126 respectively for the rears.

Conti N2's are pretty similar in price too.

Bridgestone RE050's aren't available in my size.

So that's narrowed it down to:

Eagle F1 GSD3
Toyo Proxes T1-R
Toyo Proxes T1-S
Conti N2

All cost virtually the same.

I forgot to add, wet weather performance isn't really an issue, it's impossible to drive a 360+bhp RWD car hard in the wet, no matter what tyres you have ;)

They apparently have very weak sidewalls.
 
Lol I know about the Champiro magic. Used to have them on the front of my xantia. They were pants, in the end i changed all four tyres for a set of goodyear hydragrips which are proving much better.

There's no apparently about it - they do :p

Still a great tyre for out and out grip, just dont expect pin sharp steering response and note they will lose their outer edge quite quickly if you push them. Quite a soft compound on these (which explains the excellent grip), soft rubber will strip when warm.

You have to decide what's important -

Grip
Wear
Feel
Ride
Noise
Cost

Buying tyres does my head in, I've come to the realisation you cant have your cake and eat it.

I'm not saying I don't drive it in the wet, what I'm saying is that wet weather grip of a tyre isn't an issue for me as it's so easy to break traction in the wet. I don't think that there are many tyres that can hold 360+bhp going through the rear wheels in the wet.

I have no problem with that, I enjoy muchos sideways action ;)

I think I'll discount them then. Feel is quite important and I want them to last longer than 5 minutes.

So:

Toyo Proxes T1-R
Toyo Proxes T1-S
Conti N2

I'm swaying towards the Conti's at the moment.

The sidewalls are made from cheddar and despite being highly rated tyres and the top of the range product for one of the worlds lagrest manufacturers, they are actually HORRIBLE NON PERFORMANCE CAR TYRES designed for SMALL SUPERMINI's and they don't stand up to proper performance car driving such as delivering Pizza in a Saxo, etc.

I've always put Michelin Pilot Sport on my car. Always holds well in corners, feels nice. Do get a little road noise at really high speeds, nothing to worry about. I can get 225 /45 /17 for around £80 a corner + fitting. Local garage where I get all my services etc done. I get good prices from him...

But, the pilot sport do not hold well in icy conditions. I ALWAYS go careful in bad conditions with them.. You should with any tire, but more so with the pilot sports.

IMO, I like them and worth the money. I can get good mileage on them as well.
