Sorry for the later than normal news guys - been a bit of a mare of a day in chez-99million

Some of you may have heard about the competition between BillytheImpaler and dunc to battle head-to-head with their Xeons - linky
You may also have seen the Battle Names thread which brings me to the matter in hand.

It is my honour to announce the Battle Names for the upcoming Xeon slug-out...

edited for underscoreyness

may it be a clean and noble fight and may the best beast reign victorious! :D

Poor week from me this week due to the problems I had with my machines whilst stuck on the rig :(

Never mind, I'm home now (earlier than expected) and everything is back up and running  - just need some decent WUs to get production up to a satisfactory level now (getting the odd 364 pointer but not enough and no double Gromacs)

Bit of a drop in team output which is probably due to the decrease in double Gromacs :(

Woohoo, I won the name competition \o/ which high-production beast do I get the output from then Rich? :D

As usual, many thanks for the news Rich and welcome new folders, have fun and if you need any help, just ask.

Stan :)

well it's pretty much a Xeon except for the fact it's a single-core single-cpu machine and it's not Intel :p

I'm afraid it's nothing more than an XP1700+ overclocked to 2200MHz but it's running 24/7 and should hopefully chuck out 1200 points during the week :)

geez I really am overdue for an upgrade  :D

Every little helps :)
I feel guilty taking your best producer from you (only a little bit though :p ).

I was going to start on the new farm next week but I've got the notion to build the uber gaming machine first (Opty 165/170 overclocked to hell on a DFI NF4 Expert board with 2Gb Mushkin Redline :D ). I know, I'm weak but it will be folding most of the time.

Stan :)

well the good thing about having such a lame machine is that I can afford several other slightly more lame machines, the loft is all boarded out for storage now and the missus has ok'd me to put a machine up there :)

only an XP1900 which I've just got the last couple of bits for (you gotta love the MM for bargainous spares) but as you already said every little helps - plus I'll have the extra incentive to get it sorted out this weekend now :D

Woo, im in the news.. :P and Ive only done one wuu...

Im going to be installing this here thingy on as many PCs as I can get running, ive decided the gas central heating is costing to much so I may as well get the pcs back crunching, it warms my house up much better anyway.

Also just wondering, whats the deal with the "Machine ID" during the installation config thingy? it only goes up to 8? does that mean I can only install it on 8 PC under 1 user account?

Welcome to the team, you're now officially hooked :D

The machine ID thing is for the number of clients on one machine - if you have a dual core processor you would install two clients and call them 1 and 2, if you had a quad dual core Xeon (I wish) you would install 8 clients and number them 1-8 in the machine ID section.

Stan :)

Cheers, that makes sense, Ive currently only got 2 pcs running it an 64bitXP3500 and a XP2000@2ghz, Im waiting for some Crucial RMAs then I should have another 3 or 4 PCs running. Ive got a 2.4GhzP4 laptop but from my Seti experiance thats a pile of poo and isnt worth the bother.

Ahoy chaps. I'm going to bust my butt tomorrow when I get home from work to get the Xeoninator up and crunching again. I've got a bit of something up my sleeve but I don't want to give away too much before it happens. ;)

Thanks for the news as usual, Rich. :D

What time (Eastern) do you think you will be ready to start?

I am ready whenever. Will wait for you :)

Dunc (aka The Alabam Slamma) :p

hmm... next weeks score should be a bit higher for me, ive spent aaaages on these two massive gromacs. The biggest one that has been going for a few days now will finish tomorrow, so next weeks score will hopefully seem higher than this weeks!

With processing power like that you'll not be long climbing through the ranks.

How much memory does the lappy have?
It may well be worth a go. I have a 2.4Ghz P4 desktop upstairs which does quite well when it gets decent WUs and a P4M laptop which doesn't do too badly (it loves 364 pointers when it can get them :D ).

Good luck getting your other rigs together and we'll see you up in the top rankings soon :)

I've just used ctrl-alt-del to end the fah core process because i was messing around with my cooling, and i found that it destroys the work unit. I have updated my faq to reflect this.
I lost a 683 point unit @ 95% and a 150something pointer at about 30% i think.

Whats the easiest way to pause or stop the cli client without loosing the work unit?

Looks like my production will be very poor for a while.

I'm having a folding break where i won't be producing much while i sort various issues out and try to get my head round the noise problem of my opteron.
I've also had to take my oc off while i troubleshoot some network issues on one machine, and chipset cooling on the other.

I've found a buyer for my cm realpower psu, so i'll be replacing that with a seasonic. Currently finding a good harddisk silencer, as i don't think the ocuk silenmax encluosure will help much. I need something that will reduce airborne noise.

If you end the FAHCore process, the unit will die. It's because the console thinks the core has cocked up so it deletes the work unit and starts again.

If you end the FAH50x-Console process, the core will shut down by itself and the unit will be safe.

unlucky joe :(

but yes as Mattus says if you end the actual console rather than core it shouldn't mess your WU up
alternatively if it's set up as a service you can use the windows services manager to start, stop, or even pause the folding service - that would be my preferred method of stopping the client

That's true. I'd edit the FAQ to show that that's the most graceful way of stopping the client. Killing the process shouldn't be a problem unless Windows is set to restart the service automatically if it's closed unexpectedly, which could be confusing.
