ok well i am wanting to get the most effectiver cpu cooler on the market atm as i want to overclock a lot. My specs are:
- Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz - overclocked to - 3518 MHz atm
- Prescott
- Sockets 478

Currently i have a normal intel socket 478 cpu fan and heatsink, i also have a normal case fan mounted on top of this (v effective)

what would the best fan for me to get me? i was looking at http://www.vapochill.com/main/page.asp?sideid=728 anyone if these are good or is there better?

Cheers
Nick

Personally I'm a big ThermalRight fan, and of the ThermalRight heatsinks the SI-120 is probably the best, however it's quite large so the smaller XP90C may be a more suitable choice.

Be warned though, they aren't cheap at ~£30 + the cost of a fan for them.

Another vote here for the SI-120. I have one paired up with a Thermaltake Thunderblade 120mm Blue LED fan and it cools my overclocked 3700+ to 29 idle/40 100% load. It's also on a fan controller though as at full whack it's really loud.

Saying that i have been looking at the Scythe Ninja as it has excellent reviews and has the plus side of pushing the air towards the rear exhaust fan.

Exactly what I would say:)

I've been a huge Thermalright fan since my socket A board and their heatsinks have never let me down. Used to use the 90C on my 3700 until I upgraded to the SI-120. They're both excellent coolers IMO.

The thermalrights are amazing yes, but the Ninja is still without doubt the best.

The ninja is actually designed to be able to run passive and as such, is an amazingly constucted cooler. Add a fan to it and you have the very best - not cheap though.

I'm sure you're right mate, judging from the reviews I have read, however I am only in a position to speak of the ThermalRight heatsinks from personal experience.

I'd personally recommend any ThermalRight heatsink very highly to anyone.

Don't get me wrong, I used to have an XP90 - an amazing heatsink and the quality is outstanding. It now cools my sister's prescott - poor thing.

yea thanx so no one recommends the fan + heatsink i was saying?

so all in all what is the best one for overclocking.....oh and can the 'Scythe Ninja' have a fan fitted on top? and how tall is it does anyone know?

ok i think i will go with the 'Scythe Ninja' it should fit into my computer....can i replace the fan supplied with it?
Yup, you can use any fan with it, space permitting. A lot of people recommend the Akasa Ambers but if you have space, I would get a 120x38mm fan and stick a fan controller on it.

Well, the 120x38mm fans are loud at full pelt, but can easily be tamed with a fan controller. Depending on the fan, and whether it is a 3pin or 4 pin molex will determine how easy or hard this is.

For a 3pin fan, you could use a Zalman Fanmate or for a 4 pin fan (as well as 3pin), you could use a normal 5.25" drive bay fan controller (about £10) and this could control a lot of fans in your PC with knobs. This would allow you to set the rpm of each fan individually (depending on channels) and adjust speed accordingly. I.e. when gaming, turn it up as you won't notice it and it will cool better, and near silence for surfing.

ah right i get you...can you recommend a good fan control for front bay? oh and say i want to add lots more fans how do i do this i only have 1 case fan and cpu fan atm and i have 1 3 pin connector free and one 4 pin connector free....can i get like double adaptors for 4 pins connectors?

After reading this thread I'm quite interested in trying out the Scythe Ninja myself and using it with an Akasa Amber 120mm. Was just wondering if it's possible to have two 120mm fans on it, in a push/pull config? I notice the description says it comes with fan retention clips so would it be necessary to get more of these clips to add another fan or is there some other way of attaching it?

I'm currently using the Zalman 7700 (120mm) but I'm looking at buying the Antec P180 and would like to set it up with a 120mm intake in the middle chamber, an intake fan on one side of the CPU heatsink, an exhaust on the other side, and a 120mm exhaust on the back of the case - giving a nice passage of air from the front to the back of the case. Are there any HSF that would allow this?
