MDA Pro today on web n walk? 56k Beware images within!¬

Should i?

i know its a huge phone but for £69.99 its a great deal and all that web usage will be ace. I realise i will need a smaller phone for going out etc. But going round the g/fs and browsing while at work would be ace?

Although loads of people are saying that t mobile dont know if u use the phone as a modem and use a laptop instead

The mda has loads of features but is so big???

Hmmmmmmmmmm

oh well ive been to look at both the vario an dthe pro and im afraid the vario is incredibly sexy but the pro wins as it has 3g browsing speeds and isnt "that"big for a pda

YAY! well i went for the pro on flext 35 with the web n walk and the insurance as the phone costs £500+ to replace. £7.99 a month i think? a bit steep but i guess i cancel this insurance at any time?

Any how the chap in the t mobile shop said to flash it with the imate firmware as its a lot faster.

Im just trying to work out how to install stuff like msn

EDIT T-mobile have got the latest firmware on there site that allows you to use msn....

Skype will work from what ive read its just u will be throttled pretty quick if u do.

the chap said there is a professional package coming out costing £9.99 for net use but with a 2 gig limit

Well ive just downloaded the latest stuff from t mobiles own website and its flashed ok for one moment i moved the pda and its usb lead fell out and it was dead how ever i plugged it back in and it carried on from where it was.....

Thew new version seems to have msn enabled and a newer outlook or something?

Im trying to find the vanilla software without all the t mobile crap.

Msn seems to run but doesnt actually show me online or show any contacts on line?

MSN still wont run but agile does perfectly

Just trying to find software for playing filmz etc but its murder everyone wants money

I just tryed logmein and that was just ovber gprs and that was usable if a little slow.

Still trying to find the vanilla firmware

The other thing ive noticed is that some times when u take the memory card out it doesnt always register when u put it back in. Some times requring a reboot.

Ive tryed pocket divx but the quality is iffy

I just tryed skype, just to use the chat side of it and it just wont sign in, so maybe they have blocked it rather than risk people taking the pee

web n walk has restrictions... at peak times you get a limited speed so the network doesnt get over loaded...

at the bottom it says

*Minimum term contract and credit check applies. Compatible handset required. Fair use policy applies: Relax web 'n' walk and Flext web 'n' walk price plans provide unlimited internet surfing on mobile handsets in the UK. To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers, they are not to be used for other activities such as (but not limited to): modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video download and internet based telephony. If such use is detected, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied which will result in a reduced speed of transmission.

Gavin - please keep us updated with your progress. I am hoping to 'sign up' for an MDA Pro on a 'web n walk' package shortly and am most interested in your feedback.

StevenG - T-Mobile's 'fair usage' policy states that they will throttle back you connect if they believe that you are using the device to download rather than browse. Rumour has it that they will introduce a 'walk n surf' package for £10 that includes using the device as a modem.

Gavin - overall, how do you rate you experience with the MDA Pro/walk n surf to date?

Cheers mate

Keep the reports coming!!!!!!

There isnt a peak time restriction (well none that I am aware of anyway!!) only those that abuse the service will have their account capped with a service limiting soc.

There is a new service being launched for faster speeds / larger downloads - will be launching in a few weeks(ish) ;)

They are indeed introducing a package with a 2gb cap for £9.99 where the device can be used as a modem, thus making the smaller N70 a good device.

Weebob, experiance has been very good to good. Im in a very poor signal area for all mobile phones but even on 1 bar it manages to hold on to a 3 signal and works very well for normal browsing.

The only thing which is the normal annoyance is the T mobile Branding, i downloading the latets rom update from t mobiles site which added pocket msn which lists msn messenger as its feature and hotmail etc etc

How ever, hotmail ran like a charm and was very fast. Msn messenger just signs in and sits there with no contacts being listed and me not showing as online. Agile messenger how ever runs fine.

As i said above i ran skype just to see if it would work for the instant messagingside of things but it seems they have now blocked the port as itjust wouldnt sign in what ever the settings.

Ive also used logmein to access my home server and that also runs like a charm although it can be a little laggy over gprs rather than 3g.

Wifi also worked straight out ofthe box and so far i havnt even read the instructions

The only minor gripe is that the battery is pants but then most pda/phones only managed a day and that the led changes from a green to subtle orange when u have messages rather than a more obvious red red red its just orange.........orange ......orange so the same speed as when u have a signal.

Its lovely to type on and i have normal sized fingers i guess, obviously farmers need to apply!

My questions are

1. Where oh where can i find the vanilla rom flash? Ive found a place xda-developers ftp but i dont know which one to use?
2.Whats the maximum size sd card i can put in
3.is there a upgrade for the battery?
4.can i get a outside aerial to put on my roof or window sill and plug in to improve rececption?
5.Is there any absolute must haves for this machine?(software wise.?)
6.Again i need a more powerful battery!

All in all in seems ok but battery is the major downfall. Those just wanting msn messenger would be better with the vario I as its a sexy beast but just not 3g

Gavin - by the phrase 'T-Mobile branding', do you mean the bits T-Mobile have 'bolted-on' to the standard Windows Moblie 5.0 OS? I am sure I have read that when performing a hard reset, the device gives you the option of reinstalling the t-mobile os or the original Windows 5 OS (ill have a snoop about and get back to you if I can locate the info).

When you do a hard reset it automatically loads the t mobile stuff back on there unfortunately.

I now have got skype working as well now:D its ace btw all though i used it for 1 minute as i dont want to be banned. It was more for testing and i will use it for people who use that as there im client instead of msn messenger

I have found the rom update now that is the generic one people seem to use that is made my jasjar.

Im a but reluctant to use it at the moment as T mobile dont offer any tech support when not using there rom

Im also wondering how i go about re inputting the internet details back in to the mda pro

One other thing is it only sends emails when you actually send/receive although mine is set to do this every 30 mins anyway.

One other gripe ive now found is that after its finished checking email it doesnt seem to drop the connection straight away and some time i have to do this manually.

Im really getting to grips with it now although it could do with a lot more customisation.

i will keep things posted though as people dont seem to have these things?

I might take some pics later

please do! I am seriously tempted with the FlexT35 plan with web n walk but concerned about simply not knowing enough about it to justify getting it! Keep the info coming - its MUCH appreciated mate!
