Just set up my new mobo running the asus probe tool my mb temp is currently
52 deg c showing up red on the system?
is this a duff board before I start?
thanks Phil

I had mine, 50C load, so I took off the heatsinks to check... well the one that says asus had NO contact except for 2 wee tiny strips  The top one looked ok but I AS5'ed it anyway :)

42c load now :D

You got a damn good board, but the stock paste on the sinks sucks!

I noted some pvc protective cover over the heatsinks ? from production I have taken this off but its made no difference, I also undid the dig home sink and applied a little extra paste to that set, the ausus one I will have to take the board out to remove the heat sinks plastic sprung plugs to check under that one.
anyway it been running five minutes now and the temps are still 51 deg on mobo idel?
Phil
what should the idel temps be?
thanks
Phil

Would be handy if somone could put together a step by step guide on how to apply as5 on the heatsinks for this board.

If you were thinking of taking off the heatsinks on the P5W. Take a look.

The TIM they use is carp. Hardly any contact, the southbridge just fell off. I don't know if you can make this out, but there are two chips under the top cooler not even touching the thermal tape.

AS5 on cores and some Céramique on the vregs, glued/screwed on some nice blue LED 40's. Chipset temps down from late 50's to 34C under prime.

Woah nice temp reductions! Will be doing this if i get the asus.

OT but can i ask, does the software/hardware all work properly? the remote/wifi ap, and such. Would be nice to know if the features that appeal to me actually work! As I have heared very little about them. Thanks :) how about making a big p5w dh thread and putting usefull info and such, like your re seating of the coolers into it? :) would be rather helpfull to others too i'm sure.

Céramique on the vregs.... whats the Vregs?
Sorry, electrical shorthand for voltage regulators.

P.S Don't put capacitive silver based TIM on any IC without encapusulation (cores), use a silica based compound, a lot safer.

Regarding the mobo holes on the board... i can't tell from the pics but i know the bottom chipset is held down, like most AMD boards using springy buttons (can't think of the word) and so is the Voltage Regulator.

But what about the middle chipset? Looks as if there are no mobo holes for that... and is just held by wire clips?

Is that correct? as i was planning on having everything watercooled... just like my old mobo.

bah how would i cool the middle chipset via watercooling then :/
Won't hinder temps much if i placed epox-ed a Zalman cooler on it will it?

You cant watercool the middle chipset, which is a ball ache cos that is the Northbridge.

I had a small fit last night when i realised i couldnt watercool the NB.

Good work ASUS, what the hell do we need to watercool the Southbridge for !!

Anyone care to take a few northbridge temps... stock and overclocked... cos' obviously the chipsets gonna' be hot anyways. I might end up leaving the boad as it is and not watercool them if thats the case. No point in watercooling the Southbridge as that doesn't get that hot.

Well I swapped out the first board for another as i thought 52 deg idle was to high the second board still reads 47 deg which is two degree up on the default alert settting.
It is a pain the backside having one of the chipsets under my 7900gtx slot 1 you would have some trouble fitting any cooling device if any to this chip set (the one with asus printed on it).

I have purchased my artic silver today and will commence basic mods to h/sinks as directed in the link above to see if that bring the temps down.

Has anyone managed to fit a small fan or waterblock to these chip set with any success ?

I have done the southbridge? the one with Asus wrote on it anyway with as silver 5. I left the other one cos I thought Id messed up cos when I put the heatsink back on the springs werent as tight? is this normal?

Anyway seems I have around 40c temps now. :)
