Ive just recently got a Asus P5W DH Deluxe and i started to overclock almost immediatly after i installed this board!

Im just a bit confused to how easy it was though on this chip (Pentium D 940) I wacked it straight up to 3.6 from 3.2 and it was fine straight away. Now im wondering how far can i go with this chip, had anyone got any experience in overclocking Presler core Pentium D's?

Heres a CPU-Z screen.

They are pretty flexbile, had my Pentium D 930 (3ghz) upto 4ghz and then the only problems that occured was the PWM area on the mobo was getting too hot, but not the chip!

Hi 5bjoshua,

I am currently running a P5WDH Deluxe and Intel 940. What RAM are you using? I am using the 2Gb Geil kit that was recently on special.

At this moment in time I am running at 16 x 225 (FSB of 900, timing of 4-4-4-4-12-16). I am a bit new to overclocking. Just running Orthos as I type. All at default volts. So far so good. BIOS version 901 btw.

I am interested to see how far you get and what settings you use etc.

They seem like decent chips, mine was gonna be a stop gap for a C2D, but may now wait for a quad core if it looks like the P5WDH Deluxe supports them.

Cheers,

ICE

I am running DDR2-533 atm i am going to get the same geil as you in the future though, the one that is on this week only this week.

I am currnetly leaving it at 3.6 the same as you, i am trying to stay at stock volts though.

Ill up the speed in a couple of days when i get bored or something. :p

Josh

EDIT- I cant seem to update my BIOS though im stuck on 701 or 801 or something, whenever i try installing Asus Update program i get errors and says install an asus motherboard to use this software.

OK.

Currently running at:

Everything at stock volts. Where do I go from here? I'm confused about RAM dividers etc. What is mine currently set to and what should I change it to in order to push things further?

Cheers,

ICE

Your RAM and CPU are running 1:1, you wont have to worry about your RAM being a restrictive factor when overclocking as its 667mhz fsb whereas your cpu wont even get close to that.

So it doesnt go any further on stock volts?

If you cant go any further on stock volts and its stable I would say up the volts from your 1.192v up a couple presets from that in the BIOS and go a bit further being more cautious this time checking it on OCCT or something.

Haven't yet reached the limits on stock.

What is OCCT?

If having raised the Vcore a few notches and cannot clock any further, how do i then find the max FSB? Once I have found the max FSB do I then choose the divider that allows both the max CPU and FSB clock?

Cheers,

ICE

UPDATE: Was able to load into windows with a bus speed of 240 (3.85Ghz), but crashed. Have upped the vcore to 1.260 as registered in CPU-Z. Now speed fan is saying that the CPU temp is 72c. Is this too high for a 940?

Is 72*C under load? i would say thats pretty high! Is that with a stock cooler? Im using a Zalman CNPS9500 and it seems to do a good job, 35*C idle.

You dont need to worry about Dividers as your RAM isnt your restrictive factor! Usually you would have PC3200 ram which is 200fsb which will be a restrictive factor as you have PC5300 you wont have to worry.

Google OCCT and download the program, it tests your overclock to make sure its stable.

Josh

Yep, 72 under load. That is with a Scythe Ninja with supplied fan and AS3. How reliable are the P5WDH Deluxe temps?

Looking at: http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm - Should the core temp not exceed 68.8c?

Just failed orthos with a clock of 4.274Ghz (16 * 266) with vcore set to 1.4 in BIOS - fluctuating between 1.36 (under load) and 1.408 (idle).

I'm now gonna drop the FSB by a couple of mhz. Really want to get a 1Ghz clock out of this with sensible volts / temps.

Cheers,

ICE

Nice clock!

If it stable dont worry too much about the temps. Just dont go overboard!

I think you have a better stepping than mine! :( I may be restricted as i am stuck on the same BIOS! I cant update it from Asus Update and i cant find my flash drive and i dont have a floppy disk drive in my computer atm and i dont have floppy disks anymore lol.

Ill give it a go tonight i reckon!

Josh

Well I dropped the CPU bus speed to 265 on the same volts and has been running Orthos happily for just under 4 hours. :D

I will see if I can drop the vcore at all, because i have seen temps peak at 78c , but it does seem stable.

I plan to update to the 1201 BIOS before too long, dunno how much it'll help.

Should i try raising the mch (or one of the others) to maximise my CPU clock before thinking about raising vcore again?

I'm keen to hear how you get on!

Cheers,

ICE

Wow nice overclock!

Still havnt got round to mine lol, stupidly installed Civilization 4 and ive been hooked!

Theres no point in updated the BIOS,i would if there is a problem, is there a list of stuff fixed in the BIOS updates?

Im not entirely sure what you mean by MCH though?

Your not happy with your 4.2 Ghz!!! :p :D

happy overclocking!

Ill keep you posted when i try mine!

Also what case do you have btw? Has the case got good venitlation?

Josh

I think the main benefit of the new BIOS is reduced boot times.

MCH = memory controller voltage
ICH = I/O chipset voltage
FSB Termination voltage - no idea what that does

I really want to clock my RAM now, but a bit confused with dividers etc.

I had a 'play' in the BIOS and took another screenie from CPU-Z:

Does anyone have comments?

I have an Antec P160 with a front and rear mounted 120mm fan running at 7v with the 120mm fan that came with my Scythe Ninja at 12V. Ventilation is OK, trying to keep noise down as much as possible.

Cheers,

ICE

I would try and have the rear fan as fast as possible! Especially when overclocking, maybe get some Akasa Ultra Quiets?

What FSB is your processor running at now? Im a bit confused by the RAM divider lol :p

Josh

EDIT : What method did you use to update your BIOS?

I don't want too much noise though - the rear fan at 12v is too loud. Maybe some of the fans you mentioned might be quieter, but if it's stable (which it appears to be - just past 22hrs Orthos stable) I'm not bothered.

Currently, according to CPU-Z, Bus Speed is 265.5MHz and Rated FSB is 1061.8Mhz

I updated to my current BIOS using the flash utility built into the BIOS setup. I loaded the new BIOS off a floppy disk

Cheers,

ICE

What BIOS you running now then? Is there any problems with it? Any gains? If its good i shall dig out a floppy disk drive and flash the BIOS to the new one!

Ill keep you posted on my overclocking progress.

The Akasa Fans are very quiet!!! Im sure other people may recommend others but i stand by them!

Josh

Currently running 901. I havent tried any others as I flashed to this straight after getting my motherboard (that came with 701).

Now that I am happy with this clock, I will probably move onto the latest 1301 or maybe 1305?!?! I just dont like having to redo all my settings. Appareently the main gain of the latest BIOS's is the reduce boot up time.

I may check out the Akasa fans, currently using standard Antec ones, so I'm sure cooler/quieter fans do exist.

Get clocking!

Cheers,

ICE

EDIT: Any more thoughts on my oc?

Nothing more i can say about your OC except that i am jealous! :p Hope mine reaches this!

Are you happy with your OC? I can see your itching to go further!
