Pentium D 940 Limits?

Yeah, I'm happy with my clock :D

If I can be bothered I'd like to push it more, but I don;t think theres much left in it, without raising the vcore more and your comments about my temps have put me off. Would like other peoples opinions, but it looks as if its just me and you on this one.

I really want some help with dividers as I am a total newb when it comes to them. I have the Geil PC6400 and want to get the best of that as well!

I bought this chip as a stop gap until the C2D's were at lower prices. Might now wait until the quad cores out, I just hope our motherboard supports them!

GET CLOCKING! ;)

Cheers,

ICE

Ok im updating the BIOS as it totally crashes when i wanna go past 230. Ill report back after! Gonne install the 1201 BIOS, there is a 1301 but im gonna use the one on the asus site which is the 1201.

Thanks for the link!

Josh

EDIT!!! : Just updated! It kept all my clocks when i flashed to the new BIOS so there should be nothing stopping you from updating now!!!

Cheers for that. Now running on 1201 too.

Has it helped you clock?

Have you modded your board i.e. replaced the standard thermal compounds on the north and south bridge controllers? It will probably help if you haven't and it's easy enough to do. :D

Cheers,

ICE

Have you done that? I dont think i would, ill be too worried!

Even though ive been building computers and such for many years i think ill be a bit worried about breaking anything!

When i put a zalman on my/ since sold X800XT PE that was scary enough!

I do need to put one on my X1900XT-X as it is the most annoying thing ever!!!

Ill try and clock again today as its my day off.

Josh

EDIT : PC PROBE II says that my MB is running at 33-35*C whats your like with the new paste?

Hey Ice,

whenever i change my voltage from auto it never boots, if i put it on the lowest setting, (stock volts) it wont even boot! 1.250v.

Is my board a duff? Or is it my chip?

Bit confused!

Josh

EDIT : Should i raise the MCH voltage?

EDIT : When i overclock to 237 fsb or anything over 230 with Vcore set to auto i get this message after post,

<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Follow this guide, I did, it's simple!

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=106563

Speed fan says my motherboard temps are at 45*c. I dont take a huge amount of notice of the temps.

Can't really say on the non booting after changing vcore... would say, duff board - but dont hold me to it. Try a different BIOS?

To get over 237 I would up the MCH in stages, (although I beleive many just run it at max - 1.65v), providing your RAM is still in spec. If not, then up the Vmem. Find out the max volts for your RAM sticks first though.

I forget what FSB I got to before having to raise the vcore. I think it was higher than 237. So leave the vcore for now.

HTH.

ICE

My RAM is DDR2-533mhz PC4200 Samsung generic stuff that i got with a prebuilt. This RAM should be fine?

Im quite confused by it?

Ill give it a go again when im home from work! Should clearing the cmos do anything?

Josh

I'm suprised no one else is contributing to this thread :(

Can't really help you any further on the RAM. All i can say is if it is running within it's designed spec, it should not need more volts. Maybe try a different divider? - this is where I have got to with my clocking.

If you think the BIOS is acting strangley, theres no harm in clearing the CMOS. Also, use the 'set factory defaults' option and then start again with the clock once you've have.

HTH.

ICE

Thanks for the the help ICE its not going without notice!

Ive got this stupid AI Booster and PC Probe installed, i may remove these as it may be doing something, worth a try!

Ill have a mess around in the BIOS as i cant see it being a duff board, would be weird if it was.

Thanks Again!

Josh

EDIT : In a past post i mentioned about it not finding a file on boot up from 237 fsb could there be a problem with the southbridge?

It might be the southbridge not getting enough volts, or it could be the southbridge getting too hot.

If you are happy that the board is not duff. I seriously recommend making the mods to the chipset coolers in order to improve things. It really isn't that difficult if you have the necessary tools and patience. The contact with TIM that is used from the factory is shockingly bad!

Cheers,

ICE

I think i shall do that. What thermal paste do you use? I was going to get some AS5 but is it worth it, i may just use my Dielectric Cooler Master Premium.

Josh

Never heard of your stuff, so can't comment.

I used AS3, its all I had; otherwise I would have used AS5. I'd go with AS5 if I were you, it's more "tried and tested".

Good luck with the mod, take you time and keep you patience.

Hey ICE,

Thought id give you a heads up, theres a new BIOS out, feels like third this week! Version 1305.

I have found out that why i couldnt up the VCORE, it tells you why in the new BIOS, i have to disable C1E and EIST for me to up the VCORE! So touch wood ill be able to overclock now!

At least Asus are doing something about the BIOS's!

Feels quicker booting up also!

Nice one!

Have downloaded the BIOS but not installed it yet.

I don't beleive I needed to disable th C1E and EIST?!?

Maybe it's to do the with our different steppings of CPU's?

Cheers,

ICE

Hey ICE,

Ive cracked it, ive got back to my old methods of trial and error from the beginning. Starting from 3.2 and working my way up 5fsb changes at a time and its working. This is what i should have done in the first place!

Heres where i am now, im not stopping though, need to get to 4.0Ghz to be happy!

Thanks again!

Josh

AT LAST 4.0GHZ!!!

Now im happy, dont think ill push it anymore!

Heres my overclock!

What volts are you using? Is the temp ok for idle do you reckon?

EDIT : It seems to stay around 43*C on idle maybe less.

Congarats mate!

My vcore volts are set to 1.4v in the BIOS.

I'd say your temps are fine. Lower than mine and I use a Scythe Ninja! What cooler are you using?

Cheers,

ICE
