...a 80GB dedicated server?

I am now the proud owner of a 100Mbit, 80GB dedicated server in Germany with a 1000GB bandwidth limit...

I just dont know what to do with it.

Im thinking of setting up a file server of some sort or maybe a business type project? Please reply with you ingenious (or not so ingenius) ideas :)

Thanks,

Matt

You rented a server with no actual reason?
- AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1.83GHz
- 512MB RAM
- 40 GB HDD
- 1000GB data transfer
- Zero setup fee!
- Month-to-month contract. No risks.
- 100 Mbit/s switchport, fully burstable
- 1 IP address included. Additional IP address free of charge (must comply to RIPE regulations)
- Monthly payment via PayPal or credit card (VISA, Mastercard)
- Operating system as desired (Debian, SuSE, CentOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, RedHat, FreeBSD or Windows)
- Server reboots now free of charge!
- Server resets now free of charge!

= 37.84 EUR / monthly, 0 EUR Setup

not bad really... couldnt resist :D

I'd read up on dedicated servers and find out that those people "in the know" do not refer to servers by their storage capacity ;)

Edit: Oh, it's that dedicated server? Well, I tried to warn you! In fact, in hindsight you're probably going to be thrown on the same 100Mbps switch as a couple of hundred other dedicated server customers and you'll never reach 1000GB/month :p

I'm selling aeroplane wheels for fifty quid each, that's cheap. Want some?

ok, how much is postage? :D lol

I'm serious though... That's a tremendous waste of money to rent a server for literally no good reason...

I know we all do daft things, I spent £200 building a PC I had no real use for - just most of the bits I needed for another one, so I finished it off... but renting a server? That's just strange.

tbh i would like to try and do something business-like with it.. maybe a site that has links to the best places for certain things (i.e. OcUK for a decent forum :)) and just stick a couple of ads on there?

just looking for ideas really

You want to make a links page, and you think the adverts on that will net you more than the cost of that server?

A links page?

A page of links?

That's not really a business, is it?

sorry, do you mean host it for £3?
the reason i got 80Gb/1000GBtraffic was so i could, possibly, have different things on there with different domains pointing to them.

i was looking for support on here:( lol

yh, i can connect to this server via RDC. its basically my computer but i have to access it through the web.

im probably gonna put a mail server on there too, maybe a proxy aswell
