I'm looking to take up a new hobby to try and meet people and make new friends, as all my current hobbies just involve myself (photography/guitar). I was thinking perhaps something like karate/judo etc as I'd also learn self defence and get a bit more fitter, but was wondering what the OcUK collective would suggest? :) Cheers.

Create a myspace...browse some users...choose the ones you want to be your friend....click "Add as friend". Simple!

Seriously tho, i find team-based games are best. Rugby, Football etc etc etc.

To meet new people/friends?

Going out on a Friday night with your mates is the best way to meet new people.

As for a new hobby...hmmm....

what are your interests? apart from the ones you have already said...

Currently I'm studying at uni - only thing is I'm staying at home. Big mistake. haven;t really made any friends or anything, and don't see anyone outside of uni. I'm 19, so should be a great age to meet people. Don't really have many other interests other than an interest in computers.

Not so keen on the myspace idea as I want to meet people and socialize in real life, and try to increase my confidence aswell.

Have you ever thought of moving to staying at uni? :)

That would be great for you, you would also do a lot of "growing up" if you see what I mean (i'm not insulting you)

Ok have this as an example.

I'm 18, and for this years new years I went out with 3 guys to the local O'neils (which was packed but we got early and claimed a table) and that night I met one guy who I would now consider a decent friend and me and him along with a few others (friends of his which are now my friends as well) go out, and we see others we met on New Years and always have a great time socialising etc.

Seriously dude, I know Uni studying etc is important, but get a few friends togethor and go out.

Will do you some good :)

Yeah I've thought about it, just I'm currently doing my first year, and it seems to me like thats when most people meet friends and what not (or the foundation year), so it's a bit late for that really. I don't think retaking the 1st year just to meet people would be a good idea really, hence this thread, since there is no reason I can't take up a hobby to meet people :)

Unfortunately I don't think I could afford to move out. I'm also doing an engineering course, so I spend a lot of time in uni, and doubt I'd have time to do a part time job, especially since the 1st year is meant to be easiest, and it already easts up a lot of my time :(

Unfortunately off the top of my head I cannot think of any hobbys which you will directly meet new people :(, as I've always seen hobbys as something you spend doing on your own etc.

I've met a few people through photography though :) (it's not that isolated lol)

Get to know people from Uni - Make yourself known there and you'll soon either get invited out with them or you'll end up inviting them out one night or something.

Nobody can make friends or meet new people for you. It's something you have to do :)

Good luck with what ever you do though!

Absolutely, that is why I'm looking for suggestions of something to take up, if I end up doing something like karate, it's a good excuse to talk to people and see if anyone fancies going for a pint afterwards, and to generally socialize :) It's just I was looking for other suggestions as there is probably a few good ideas that I've not even considered, but would be very enjoyable to do.

Serial killing! Just make each successive killing totally different from the last to throw the police off. Like for the first one, leave a mates w**ksock at the scene.

I'm looking to make friends, not kill them off ;)

Where do you live? I'll be your friend :D

Going out as much as possible is the only way I can think of really. Obviously it's easier with other people around you, there must be someone you can go out with?

Snowboarding, although in the UK you are fairly limited, also an expensive hobby to get in to.

I love it, only started 14 months ago (im 28  ) and just wish I'd started years ago, but the UK is pretty poor for snow based sports, although Scotland has some good pistes I hear.

Get with some like-minded people and its a great laugh.

Failing that, a chess club might interest you...
