Part 1. Bought some parts.

Involved a big road trip to the deep South.

Part 2. Changed the brakes and dashboard.

Dashboard has since been almost completed and a dash pocket put in place of the airbag blank on the passenger side.

Part 3. Swapped the engines over.

Ran into a few troubles they are all listed in the thread.

Now this weekend i had to take a train down to Coventry to hopefully finish off my car and scrap the coupe. Train wasnt too bad, £11 from Wigan to Coventry with Virgin trains.

First job, had to replace the radiator as mine had a hole in it. No problems there. Tighten the exhaust up and put the backbox on easily.

Used a funnel and some garden hose to make a snake to fill the gearbox up with fresh oil (this cured the strangely short throw and the crunching into reverse).

Filled up the system, heated it up and it and it held all the water so was a happy chappy. Drained it all today and refilled it with proper coolant.

Had some trouble getting the bonnet to sit properly, we took the bonnets off to make it easier to get at the engines, not realising how much of a pain they are to align!
Ended up putting it on the latch and wrapping cable ties around it to get the ruddy thing to close enough to get home. Spent all day faffing and finally got it to shut properly today.

Problems we ran into, didnt know which way the boost controller went on the hose so a quick test found we had it on the wrong way when it hit 18psi....

Popped a hose off when an Astra Turbo wanted to play, ooops.....

Popped a (different) hose off on the way up the M6 and my bonnet was cable tied shut and it was dark so had to limp home!

I need all new boost hose and clips for the boost controller, just a temp job on there atm. Anyone able to recommend a good supplier?

Need to replace the coil so i can use the magnecor king lead instead of an OEM one.

Still need to figure out the fan wiring for the loom, its tricky and nobody has it done properly yet, ive just got a single fan on a 12v over-ride switch for use when standing in traffic.

The coupe wasnt too bad, the rear suspension was a pain to get off and involved hammers, breaker bars and swearing.

The front suspension nuts were rounded so hacksawed through the tie roads so the front hubs/arms/suspension and driveshafts are all still one unit.

Inside the coupe it stank, there was 3" of water in the boot and when destroying the boot build we found a used hash pipe......

Now the pictures!

Engine bay, the wiring is a bit of a state still. The cold air box needs to go on yet, and the battery needs to be moved to the boot, so suffers from some heatsoak if left standing but thats understandable when you see the engine bay.

Mocal boost gauge temp fixed there.

3.5" I think, its a mongoose exhaust.

And an overall picture, wish id had my decent camera and not my phone as its a nice picture.

I need to finish off the KONI shocks and then get them on the car, but i know its not going to go well, the standard shocks will break when i try to remove them......

I have my MG 17" alloys but i need tyres for them, but all my moneys going into getting the car sorted, the SEI wheels have proxes on them so its alright.

Oh, and it seriously shifts! :D

As I have been saying on IRC berger, looks like you have done a fantastic job.

Can't wait to see it lowered with the MG wheels though. :D

Fantastic stuff Karl, was talking to Si before and he was telling me about it :D

Keep the SEi wheels. I think they look superb on lowered suspension. More of a sleeper too. Like the exhaust though. Very subtle. Sound nice?

So, you got a GBE on there? I've just ordered myself a boost gauge so will get that plummed in for now and move my battery to the boot this weekend. Then next month it's GBE, suspension (found a full GMax spring and shock setup for £70) and a front strut brace.

Turbo's are fun though! Nobody tries it on with my car until I plant my foot and they hear the turbo. Had a 5 door wedge (probably a 214 the speed that I left him behind) trying to keep up while driving back from my Dad's on Sunday.

Just wondering, what's yours like when it comes on boost in first and second? Pretty aggressive?

Ohh, regarding boost hose (I looked this up tonight on RT) get some 3mm vac hose from eBay. Available in all kinds of pretty colours ;)

First will spin the wheels up once its boosted unless its REALLY grippy tarmac, second you can feel it struggle for grip but it doesnt obviously lose traction. Need to hold the wheel in both those gears ;)

Oh and the exhaust isnt subtle, it sticks out like a sore thumb (imo), its blooming huge and can wake the dead!

Nice job there matey! I want one for myself :) Just the fuel consumption would be a killer!! Do you have many further plans for it?

:D

I thought I'd be used to mine by now, but even when setting off normally and going around a roundabout, it's still a shock when it starts coming on boost in first... funny though!

These crappy almost bald tyres are actually performing better on the turbo than on the 220. They seem to grip better through the bends and I've not had the ABS kick in once!

So your exhaust sticks out quite far? It's a coupe exhaust isn't it? Probably sticks out about the same as my old Scorpion.

Yeah id say its about the same as that, probably not much more than the OEM one, just notice it more because its nearly double the size! :D

ABS is for girls ;)

More problems ARGGGGG!

PAS pipe has split somewhere and is spraying the stuff out at a rapid rate when the steerings used, so getting on my drive empties a load out onto the downpipe making a grinding noise and a big cloud of stinking smoke!

Its a right paint to get under and look where its leaking from too! I think its rubbing on the turbo elbow to the downpipe.

Big thanks to AGW for coming and meeting me (was picking some parts off him for a friend) but blew up on the way in a cloud of smoke when i was getting lost so called him up and came and gave me a hand. :)

Happens to a lot of Rover Turbo's. The heat wrap on the PS pipe that runs next to the downpipe can slip (or some people leave it off altogether) meaning that the pipe melts and sprays out PS fluid.

Maybe it wasn't aligned properly when fitting, which then rubbed away on the downpipe and made a hole in the heat wrap and melted the hose.

Sure looked like it by the amount it was leaking :(

Still, glad you got home and glad I got to see the car  I want an atmos DV now :(

You do need it on then? Would have thought if it was a centimeter or two away from the exhaust downpipe/elbow it wouldnt be hot enough to melt through the pipe!

Ill have an inspection on Thursday as i dont have time tomorrow, have uni and work, its terrible getting home from work on the train too, it just didnt come last time!

Oh yeah, it's definitely needed. You'd be surprised just how hot things get under the bonnet. Bend the pipe a bit further away if you can as well.

Same with the one at the back of the sump. One of the pipes runs close to the downpipe and without the heat wrap, the pipe could split.

If you can't get your hands on a new pipe for a few days, take the radiator and intercooler out and cover the split with Araldite.

Yours is only a low pressure pipe so will hold nicely (until the Araldite melts, lol).

It's doing a great job on one of my PS pipes :D

p.s. Just bought some vac pipe for my boost gauge which should be here tomorrow. Then I can see what boost it's running at, as it seemed to do a pretty good job of keeping up with yours down that sliproad. Wonder what people were thinking ;)

Couldnt really tell down the sliproad, think i pulled away a bit but i probably put my foot down first, id expect mine to be quicker through the gears as its shorter ratio as its a nasp block and is boosting at 12psi (but its fluctuating a bit as i need new hosing on there which doesnt help). Two rather loud green Rovers following each other :D

Yeah, you defo pulled away from me, but like you said, it's to be expected with yours running more boost and your poncy short ratios :p What does yours do at the redline in 2nd?

Still fun though :D

Yours sounded and looked seriously smart. Makes me miss my hatch now :( What DV have you got on there? Motobodge bolt-on?

Yup its the motobodge one, and its awesome :D

Erm ive not really redlined it but its about 65ish if you took it right up to the limiter, i shift at 57 or so if im gunning it, but theres no need unless your only bothered about a 0-60 number, just keep the boost built up between the gears :D

Im planning to have it done by the rolling road day, so should be awesome then.

I hope you dont mind me crashing your thread a bit berger, but am after some advice :p

We fitted alex's replacement turbo the other day and it doesn't seem to have a recirc sounding like dump valve as the other one did, you get more of a wastegate chatter. Can you just swap the two end units over and would it benefit if we did this?

Also this turbo runs out of puff really high up the rev range, dropping to 9psi, is that a weak actuator arm or similar?

Wheres some decent pictures of your car also ;)

Cheers :D

WTF

Obviously someone has it in for me

Could a mod please email me with the registration e-mail and an IP address for this joker.
