Just a word to the wise for people that have access to chips based on batch codes. Avoid 7638A742 like the plague. Worst C2D chips I have ever come across. Failing Orthos with 1.45 on the core at 2.7G's and will not boot at 400FSB with any amount of voltage.

Gutted - doesn't sound good! I thought pretty much all conroes were 3ghz plus performers! :(

Sorry to hear that Asgard! You got another you could use or can you send it back and swap it?

it could just be one dodgy cpu? i know that asgaurd isnt a noob at overclocking so he is doing everything right, but i dont see what intel could have done to make such a poor chip, it could just be that you got very unlucky

You have no right to send a CPU back if it doesn't over clock.
I know... but you do have distance selling rights. If you don't want it within a certain period you can send it back 'no questions asked'! :)

Would just be a better option than living with it if you'd intended it to clock well!

Its OK just 3 that passed through my hands and I always check for overclockability and thought I would give you the heads up. Currently using a 29B so I'm happy.

I have a 29B as well, good stepping have been to 3.6ghz just prefer the lower volts and temps at 3.4ghz for 24/7 usage. Thanks for the heads up on the other stepping as im about to build a new pc for a friend :)

i have a 29b as well

great little chip 3.4 @ stock volts 3.6 @ 1.45 not taken it higher but i reckon it could do more without raising the vcore too high

Ehh... are you some kindof captain planet for the CPU world? The CPU companies make n ****** fortune off of us... the people who overclock are a drop in the ocean...

He means that by overclocking you void your warranty, therefor giving you no right to send it back. ;)

Apart from under the distant selling regulations act or what ever it be called as was said before.

(p.s. n00bish but what what do you mean by 32b and 29b and so on?)

the number means the week it was produced not sure on the letters mean maybe A,B,F etc mean what factory it was produced in and what batch

The phrase: "No **** sherlock..." springs to mind. :D

EDIT - Smiley added for tounge-in-cheekness.

No he means that a chip is only guaranteed to operate at stock speeds with no overclock being guaranteed. Therefore he'd have no basis on which to send it back and ask for a replacement/refund. It also does technically void your warranty but there's no way of them finding out whether you've overclocked it, unless there are scorch marks or suchlike.

Tweakers folklore

To be perfectly frank, I'd hesitate to buy a chip on the personal recommendation of an individual who has the time and motivation to compare CPUs on the basis of their overclocking (overbussing) potential and then sees fit to post a warning against a particular "vintage" of chip on the basis of "tests", probably carried out in a clutterd bedroom in the wee small hours of the morning.
