Avoid 6600 - Batch 7638A742

To be perfectly frank, I'd hesitate to buy a chip on the personal recommendation of an individual who has the time and motivation to compare CPUs on the basis of their overclocking (overbussing) potential and then sees fit to post a warning against a particular "vintage" of chip on the basis of "tests", probably carried out in a clutterd bedroom in the wee small hours of the morning.

Unless you know the op personally and have been in his "cluttered bedroom", I would keep your comments to yourself.

Well my new e6600 arrived today.

L640A690

I'll build the system sunday and see what it can do. Anyone else got one of these?

So if his bedroom was tidy and the tests were carried out mid-afternoon,the results would then suddenly become valid would they?

I'd be much less inclined to take advice from someone who can't spell cluttered! :D

Well its all in and running, Just finished installing vista and sorting the apps I need for work. Then I'll start worrying about overclocking :D

I know... but you do have distance selling rights. If you don't want it within a certain period you can send it back 'no questions asked'! :)
Thats only if you don't open a product. You can't open a retail CPU Box then decide you don't want it, OEM yes, Retail no.

Might not be as bad as feared, at least for me.

Dropped voltage down to 1.2750V (just curious to see would it boot below stock)

Everything loaded fine, havent checked stability, but running at 2.7GHz, 300 MHz FSB @1.275V

EDIT:Unfortunately, stock cooling has been unable to prevent idle temps running up to 43C, I think I'll get an Ultra120 or tuniq tower if they fit in an antec p160.

Well I have this chip currently running at 3.6, another 2 at different codes running at the same or above, so methinks you are unlucky and I have to agree with the other posters that it is probably unwise to dismiss a wafer based uopn a few personel bad experiences as the C2D's are "all" excellent clockers. Sorry to hear you had a bad chip Asgard, I had the same problem with the board in my sig, couldn't rma as it said whats on the tin, ordered another and bammo 4ghz game stable on a 6600, throttled back for day to day use to 3.8. Edit not the week you mention btw.

LOL @ you,

The Asgards testing is as valid as mine and countless others on this forum.

We like to share our knowledge and findings.

Some of us have access to countless ammounts of hardware on a regular basis.

So stop with the trolling right now

so does that mean, you can lend a pauper your 8800 gts, as I am using my onboard vga on my conroe945g-dvi. :p

Its the last line of all the text on the cpu. You have a L632A, quick google shows they clock well hitting 3.6ghz and above.

Its this long enough to call it stable!!

Thats same code as the one Asgard posted in first post.

I very happy with this so far.Next step is the 400x9(3600mhz)
