What's the point in starting a thread that's just going to get pointless replies for the first few pages (or more)?

You said yourself that you don't think anyone's actually going to post anything useful in the thread.

Maybe if the card was actually released and available then the thread might be slightly more worthwhile. But this is just going to be another "+1" thread for people to spam. By the time the ultra is actually released anyone who actually wants to contribute something useful to the thread will have to trawl through 2 or 3 pages of utter spam. :rolleyes:

I would call myself a hypocrite for contributing nothing useful myself, but then seeing as its currently impossible to contribute the requested topic, then I guess my conscience is clear :rolleyes:
 
I'm all up for new, faster high-end products - in fact I love them. But this 8800Ultra takes the biscuit.

Not only is it a pathetically small clock-bump with no architectural improvements, but it creates a new and completely unjustified price point! In a way it reminds me of the 9800XT (the successor to 9800pro and merely a small clockspeed bump), although at least ATI introduced it at the same price as the 9800pro was originally.

I've never thought this way about a computer-related product before, but I seriously hope that people don't go out and buy this card. I don't want to see nvidia turn a profit from such a cynical move.

I agree. It is a dangerous precedent and it smacks of an arrogance from Nvidia in holding the crown. In no way is this a good thing for consumers, neither would the R600 being a poor contender, it is always better for us to have a happy medium in card performance.

you do have to remember, the 9800xt had 256mb memory, only after the 9800xt came out did they make the 256mb 9800pro available. even its small bump in speed was percentage wise, quite a bit bigger bump than the 8800ultra is getting :p


i think this thread is more of a, everyone line up and wait to laugh at the first idiot that posts with their 8800ultra.

its just funny, its the first big card that people won't get jealous of, or wish they had, but really just laugh at the idiots that buy it. the main problem is, it won't allow you to play at any higher resolution or quality setting than you currently play at so its pointless.

Nah, the 256mb 9800pro was around before the 9800XT came out.

I know this for sure, because I was involved in a legal wrangle with a particular company around that time.

]It was between the time that the XT was announced, and when it was released. The 256mb 9800pro was mistakenly advertised by this company at £130 (when it was retailing for around £300 at the time, being the top end model). A few hundred people placed orders overnight at the time, and the company resisted, saying that the price was clearly a mistake. In the end though, they had also advertised the product at this price in an edition of PC zone, and so had to admit that the price wasn't 'clearly' wrong, as it wasn't spotted before the ad was placed. In the end, we all got 128mb versions of the card at £130 instead (which was still a bargin) :p

Anyway, the point is at the time the 256mb card was being phased out in anticipation of the XT.




edit - as for performace hike, the 9800XT offered 7.4% increase in memory, and 8.4% in core (380/680 vs 412/730), whereas the Ultra offers +20% mem and + 6.4% core (575/900 vs 612/1080). So overall the Ultra is a slightly better jump. But still, it certainly can't justify an increased price-point.

I thought the Ultra had lower power consumption at the same clocks?
I don't really care that much as I see no reason to buy one over a GTX but it was just a thought...
I really hope AMD's card brings something to the table or we'll be stuck in the rut of no card improvements for quite a while.
