LONDON (Reuters) - A man has been convicted of racially aggravated harassment after calling a Welsh woman English.

Michael Forsythe was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months, after being found guilty of racially aggravated disorderly behaviour, a court official said.

Forsythe received the sentence at Welshpool Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was also ordered to pay 200 pounds in prosecution costs.

The former lorry driver, who is originally from Northern Ireland, but lives in Powys, Mid Wales, called Lorna Steele an "English *****" during an argument after he collided with her parked vehicle in the Welsh market town of Newport in February.

Forsythe has attacked the prosecution as a waste of time and money, according to the Daily Mail newspaper.

"I find it unbelievable that I've been prosecuted for this," he said. "I've travelled all over Europe as a lorry driver and never had any problems with anybody and now they're officially calling me a racist.

"It's political correctness gone mad."

This is absolutely crazy.
Just thought id share it.

That'll learn him

Should have called her a fat ***** instead.

I wonder what would happen then :D

I imagine she's a ***** (whatever the word Forsythe used), just not an English one...
What an absolute waste of time, kudos to the our legal system.

Erm, well we'd get done for racial if we used the phrase "**** bitch" - why is this any different?

Feel a bit sorry for the bloke, he's obviously being made of an example, but he's probably a Welsh **** anyway ;)

It also points out the small issue with the Irish never really liking the English. My father is Irish, he was born there and had to move here because his parents were persecuted for being Catholics. He was also further persecuted here as a kid for his accent and nationality, as well the obvious background between the Irish and the English back in the troubles. So my father actually really hates the English, but I'm sick of his and a lot of the Irish's xenophobic attitudes to the English to be honest.

He once yelled and threated to disown me when I said to him I considered myself born and raised an Englishman. So there's some perspective on Irish attitudes and probably why this truck driver used it as an insult.

'What are you in for?'
Prisoners reply - 'Assault', 'GBH', 'Drug Trafficking', 'Murder, you?'
