Maybe it was an honest mistake. Maybe he didn't actually realise she wasn't English. Or are we not allowed to call anyone English just in case they actually consider themselves something else?

Yes we are, if anyone called me English then I take great insult to that, as they say you can call us sheep s***** but never EVER call us English.

Its unbelievable how some posters aren't getting this.
She wasn't complaining that he had got her Nationality wrong.
If the man had just called her a bitch then nothing would have happened.
Its the fact that he used a Nationality (even though it was wrong) in front of the word bitch.

Still stupid though.

Thats what I was going to say.

Why did he need to put a nationality infront of the insult? He needs to try and expand his vocabulary with more offensive words then he wont need to use a nationality.

The image is brilliant though.

After years of inbreading...

His eyes scare me and it looks like they scare her.

I kind of agree that if we are going to take the stance that racially abusing people is bad it should apply to everyone, so yes what he did was wrong, but as she wasn't actually english it just makes him seem stupid for using the wrong insult.

A fine is fair at the most. He shouldn't be suspended or put in prison.

It also points out the small issue with the Irish never really liking the English. My father is Irish, he was born there and had to move here because his parents were persecuted for being Catholics. He was also further persecuted here as a kid for his accent and nationality, as well the obvious background between the Irish and the English back in the troubles. So my father actually really hates the English, but I'm sick of his and a lot of the Irish's xenophobic attitudes to the English to be honest.

He once yelled and threated to disown me when I said to him I considered myself born and raised an Englishman. So there's some perspective on Irish attitudes and probably why this truck driver used it as an insult.

I would point to the Scottish before N.I. in terms of hating the English, half of Northern Ireland are very pro england, significant number of Protestants wear the English football top. In regards to the other half I think they have quite a good reason to hate the English, a lot more present and current affairs than the Scottish hatred I would say.

I've travelled all over Europe as a lorry driver and never had any problems with anybody
Did he insult them to their face using their nationality as part of the insult?

To be honest, the verdict was fair, the sentence totally disproportionate.

Just do him for abusive language and let him off with costs.

Idiot woman. She's in a single stroke bringing more of the "get that person in court" culture and turning people against her whole nation. Nice one...

Surprised this hasn't been quoted yet!

For Gods sake man it's TEACH.

Sorry, winds me up.

LOL, I was going to say that but it looks so silly I thought he was being ironic/sarcastic or something. To actually type it wrong... :p

The word is teach. now that is ironic.

im interested in this case from the perspective that I am forever being confused with English people by our culturally ignorant cousins from across the pond.

I can see it from her point of view, as all she wanted was an appology, which lets be fair is a bit petty.

I think, right outcome, wrong punishment. Suspended or not, its still stupid.

since when has english or welsh been a race?

Tbh, race is really just a social construct with arbitrary boundaries - e.g. categorising ginger haired people into their own race is just as arbitrary as the "caucasian" race.
