Got a call from the dealers the other day to say they had snapped the key because the locking wheel nuts had been put on too tight

They are charging me £170 to do it and said its possible that the hubs & wheels might get damaged ..Excelent
the locking wheel nuts that are on are just standard Mcguard ones

Anyone know the likelihood of them knackering the hubs and wheels removing them?

Cheers.

So they snapped the key and want you to pay to sort it out? I wouldn’t be happy with that if it was my car!

Absolutley fuming to be honest,
The wheels were fitted by a tyre bloke from Ebay who I watched fit them to the correct torque

The downside is I cant prove they were correctly fitted so they will wiggle out of it.

haha i thought that too

might need to replace the wheel?

thatll be when they tried to get the locking bolt and and shagged your wheel in the process

wtf? they are pulling your pud. It takes about 30 seconds to remove a mcguard locking nut, without using the right key.

Found this out when we ripped all the nice bits off the wifes old pug and the locking key was missing.

Shame I am not very mechanically minded :)
Just hope I don't go back in on Monday to a car needing new wheels and hubs because the trainee has bashed them off with a sledge hammer.

You can pick up locking nut removeral tools for under £40. Like an internally threaded socket, hammer it on, then put either an airgun or electric impact driver and they pretty much fall off.

It has an "opposite lock" thread inside it which cuts into the head of the locking nut.

OR

You can mash an 18mm disposable socket over the heads and wind it off yourself.

the mcgards i have basically have a big sleve bearing around the edge, smash something on to that id it ought to just spin.

also, not all wheels have the space to get larger sockets in

I deny any allegations that i'm useless and keep losing locking nut keys :p

Apparently if you contact McGard they will send you out a replacement key for little to no charge.

If you send McGuard a close up photo and copy of ownership details of the car they can supply a replacement key.

If you have the number of the key its a lot easier though, you just need to quote that.

I have the number that came with the locks its a shame the girlfriend told them to go ahead removing them before she spoke to me

I guess a new key with mashed wheel locks wont be much good.
