ATI or NVIDIA

Heh you could try. :) If money is an object you will get just as good results from the 256MB 8800GT as you will from the 512MB one :)

Yes, it's possible to run 4 cards, and from what I can tell you could on your board. Heat will be an issue you will need an extra fan close to the two cards that end up close together. Or you could watercool :D

8800gs
8800gt 256
9600gso

Are the cards to get - all below 50w at load and around the 5k mark

the new gts 512mb is the next best in points per watt

The old gts 320 and 640 use around 100w at load for less points - still a very good card to fold with as you can OC the shadders very high (2000ish) when you lower the core and ram speeds - gets around 6k ppd and 10c lower temps :)

Got a 8800gs of mm for £30 but my work pc has a via chip set so will not work :(
Will be swaping pc's soon

Impressive looking! Should kick out some serious points (and draw some serious power :p) if you can get them to all work together nicely. Heat may be an issue as you said - airflow is probably poor at the bottom of the case there, and i dont think adding a second GX2 is going to help! Tried adding any extra case fans to stop the heating?
