Whoops, just smashed the screen on my iPhone. O2 are going to arrange for a replacement to be sent out on tuesday.

Does anyone know if it's a simple process to copy all my data and contacts from the old phone onto the replacement one? I assume it's simply a matter of syncing the old phone with itunes so all the data/apps/emails/messages etc are stored on the pc, swap the sim card into the new phone then let the new phone connect with itunes?

Anyone done this and successfully not lost all their data?

Yes, it's exactly the procedure I took when I moved from the 3G to the 3GS. Totally seamless.

Cool. I've just done a backup as well so hopefully it'll just be a matter of resyncing it from the backup.

make sure you unjailbreak it before sending it back though ;) (do an erase all data and settings on the phone, then put it in DFU mode and restore the OS through iTunes).

On a related note..

Dear Daniel,

Thank you for choosing AppleCare Service.

Your IPHONE 3G has been inspected by Apple technicians, who have determined that it has been subjected to accidental damage or misuse, which is not covered by the warranty or an Apple service contract. Therefore your original product is being returned to you unrepaired. You should expect to receive it within two business days along with a letter that gives details of this assessment. Apple will send you a separate email to indicate that this service request is complete and to provide the tracking information for the shipment.

Visit Repair Statusto view the current details of your service request.

Regards,
The AppleCare Team

Now, I understand if I'd dropped it down the toilet or thrown it out of a car whilst moving, but it's near mint condition apart from the odd scratches.

To say I am livid is an understatement.. is there a way to appeal this BS?

@ OP, definitely wipe it in DFU mode with the latest f/w. Don't give them an inch once they've got your phone in their possession.

@ EVH - what was wrong with yours to send it back?

What was the fault?

Wi-Fi won't work.

The 3G has a seperate Wi-Fi / Cellular chip so it's not affecting calls, but it's annoying as it means everything has to go via iTunes if it's >10MB in size.

This is a classic example of why insurance is utter bull****. Only 2 things i have insurance on and they are both required by law, house and car. The rest is a waste of time. Take your payments each month and put it in a plastic pig and then when you smash your phone empty your pig and buy a new one.

Job done

Stupid thing to say really, how long would it take you to save up for an iPhone then instead of paying insurance money? Several years I think you'll find.

was any reason for the refusal stated? Had you jailbroken it? I'd be getting shirty with them if I were you, especially if it's near mint - perhaps send a letter before action giving them 14 days to sort it or you take small claims action - consumeractiongroup (CAG) will have lots of templates and plenty of help if you need to go down that route.

No, nothing done to it via software or hardware.

Only thing I can think of is that they've refused it on the grounds that the moisture detectors inside have changed colour. They have stated they'll send a report back with the device so I will have to wait and see, but that's the only thing that springs to mind.

It may have gotten wet from light rain but I've never dropped it in water. Also, it makes no sense because the weather has been fine for about a month so the last time it could have conceivable gotten wet doesn't tie up with the sudden death of the Wi-Fi module.

As the cover ran out on Saturday I'm stuffed.. so it could well have been a ploy to fob me off just long enough so I'm forced in to a hefty repair bill or simply a lazy technician. Either way I expected more.

Let me reiterate.. I pull my phone out to call people. If I'd dropped it in water I wouldn't bother wasting my own time sending it off for repair. Despite what my mother says; I'm not an idiot ;)

I know you say it's out of warranty, but you informed them of the issue whilst in warranty, so they should still honour the warranty if you can convince them it was not your fault that the issue arose.

I would suggest you take it into an Apple store and deal with the staff in person. They have been very helpful in my experience, and it can't hurt to try.

That moisture sensor is a joke, it could very very easily get wet if the phone was used in even the lightest rain, or in fact if in an inside pocket it could even be exposed to a lot of sweat and become wet. I would STRONGLY argue the point if that's what they are suggesting.

It wasnt meant literally, but the principal is the same. You get nothing for insurance payments, they always find a way out of it. Hence only having it on something thats a legal requirement.

Ive had mobiles for 16 years and never paid a single insurance in that time. Never lost one or broke one, maybe im just careful, but in my book if i had been paying 10 quid a month for all that time im about £2000 better off now. By my reckoning thats 4 iphones ;)
