Smashed iPhone

It wasnt meant literally, but the principal is the same. You get nothing for insurance payments, they always find a way out of it. Hence only having it on something thats a legal requirement.

Ive had mobiles for 16 years and never paid a single insurance in that time. Never lost one or broke one, maybe im just careful, but in my book if i had been paying 10 quid a month for all that time im about £2000 better off now. By my reckoning thats 4 iphones ;)

To be fair, I think you are just one of the lucky ones. I've had phones stolen and broken so the £7 it cost me saved me a hell of a lot of money in the 6 years I've had a contract. 2 years of that thye gave me the insurance for free so I've only paid 4 years @ £7 - £336. I think I had ot use it 3 times, so effectively I'm in profit.

Sorry am I missing something? You smashed the screen on your iPhone and you want Apple to sort it for free?!
Is this directed at me, the OP? If so, yes. I pay a monthly insurance on the iPhone and that insurance states in the Terms and Conditions that the insurance covers accidental damage. In the case of the smashed screen, I don't think a new phone is unreasonable. Are you missing something?

The courier's coming to swap the phone today. I've erased all data on the phone but I'm not sure whether to reinstall the os back to an unjailbroken state because a: I'm not sure how to do it! and b: I don't want to risk itunes ditching all my data/contacts/etc by accident when it tries to sync to my old, wiped phone.

On the subject of there being a possibility of them not honouring the claim because I've jailbroken my phone - the insurance is through O2, not apple - this is not a warrenty issue. In my case (as opposed to EVH's) I'm not sending my broken phone off to Apple for a fix or replacement, whereby they can inspect the phone and decide that it's been tampered with. I'll be getting a direct swap from the courier on my doorstep.

That's what I'm hoping for in any case!

iTunes keeps multiple backups.

Essentially, if you've backed it up by syncing, you'll get the opportunity to choose your backup from a list. Just hold power + home button on the phone until iTunes detects a phone in "recovery mode" and click restore.

This will restore it to a factory state. I'd make sure you do it because they specifically warn against software modifications..

WARNING: Apple has discovered that some of the unauthorized unlocking programs available on the Internet may cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software. As part of the service process, Apple will update the software on your iPhone to the latest version. IF YOU HAVE MODIFIED YOUR IPHONE'S SOFTWARE, YOUR IPHONE MAY BECOME PERMANENTLY INOPERABLE WHEN APPLE UPDATES THE SOFTWARE. Making unauthorized modifications to the software on your iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement, and the inability to use your iPhone due to unauthorized software modifications is not covered under your iPhone's warranty.

Don't give them an inch. Very easy to restore to factory state, you can either use the method in the post above mine, or an easier way is to switch the phone off completely, detach it from the computer, shut down iTunes than hold the "home" button for a few seconds, keeping it held down, plug it into the computer, still holding it down start itunes and it'll eventually say it's attached to an iPhone in recovery mode, click the "restore" button and sit back.

Yep, all sorted now, it's been restored to a factory state and then setup again with itunes. There should be no trace of the jailbreak anymore. Just waiting for the courier to arrive now. He better pitch up before I go to work at 3!

yep.

TaC state that the insurance covers:

"Accidental damage, inc water damage"
"Theft from a secure motor vehicle"
"Theft from a secure premises"
"Attended Theft"
"Loss"
"Replacement abroad"

They guarantee a new replacement.

The only thing you're not covered for is unattended theft. Seems reasonable enough.

How much does the insurance cost?
