Yes, boring I know! But I've always wanted to do an 'official thread'. I feel validated. :D

Figured I'd make this thread; it's pretty self-explanatory...

If you play chess regularly, or are looking to get involved and brush-up your game, you now have somewhere to post and ask those silly questions.

To kick us off, I'm thinking of getting a little OcUK chess tournament or maybe even a league (knock-out or round-robin based) going for a little bit of fun. I'm sure we have a site-subscriber somewhere who'd be kind enough to start us our own little group too.

If you're interested, just say so. A few of us are already over at Chess.com (a very good site I must add), so I'm assuming we will function through there. Time isn't really an issue as games don't have to be played 'live' and can be anywhere between 3-15 days per move, although for the above, I think the 3-day per move format will work best.

We have our own Chess.com group, found here.

Once you have signed up to Chess.com, just post a link to your profile and I'll add it to the list below:

Does anyone remember the way to record a part played game?

If I remember correctly, sitting as white, one starts from the top left (the A8 square (Black QR1 in old money)) and uses numbers to represent vacant squares and letters to represent pieces and pawns. Capital letters for White lower case for black. Thus if the 8th rank had a black king on the A8 Square and the white king on the H8 Square that would be recorded as: k/6/K. The next row would follow the same procedure, double // indicate moving from one rank to another, if you are writing in on one continuous line, or you can drop down a line as I've done here.

So here's a very simple "White to Move Against ANY Defence" in TWO moves.

3/k/4
R/6/R
3/n/4
8
8
8
8
3/K/4

Good Luck (answers to me on the back of a signed blank cheque etc).

I'm not a fan of online chess, because I don't know if I'm playing against a human or a computer. I mean, have a program like Chessmaster open in one window, set to grandmaster difficults. You play the moves your opponent makes into CM, it gives you the best reply, which you then put into the web game.

sicilian defence is awesome

i should study it one day

In my youth it was said that the Sicilain (e4,c5) was played by players who were NOT prepared to to face The Kings Gambit (e4,e5,f4!).

If I played white, I usually chose the lazy option of d4. Against e4 as black, I'd usually reply with e5 and hope for the Spanish (Ruy Lopez). Bobby Fischer said that the "Kings Gambit was busted" but I never had an easy time defending it. I found it totally frightening!

Strangely enough, if I play on line chess at home against a computer, I've had more success as white with the Kings Gambit than any other opening. The computer will invariably opt for the accepted option rather than going for the declined variation, which usually gives white a more attacking game!

I might be wrong here, but I seem to remember that most high ranking games are drawn, white wins more games than black, but of the games played and won by black the Sicilian has the most successes!
