Here it is, the AMD Radeon HD 6870, all dressed up to go to work. There has been quite some speculation surrounding the naming scheme AMD is going to adopt with the HD 6000 series, but fresh information suggestively lays some of that to rest. Firstly, Radeon HD 6800 series is built around the "Barts" GPU, not "Cayman". Barts is a new performance GPU, though isn't the highest-end single GPU from AMD (which is reserved for Cayman). Barts "XT" is Radeon HD 6870, and Barts "Pro" is HD 6850. Pictured below is the HD 6870. At a purely subjective glance, the HD 6870 reference design card seems to be as long as the HD 5850 reference.

The new Radeon logo has been Photoshopped on to the fan, so the products in market will definitely do away with the older ATI logo. The rear panel resembles that of the Radeon HD 5800 series, except that the exhaust grille seems slightly wider, there are two DVI-I connectors, one standard HDMI, and two mini DisplayPort connectors for a change. The connector output sharing scheme isn't known right now, it could be 3 or 4 head Eyefinity, or all-out 5 head Eyefinity, a yet to be detailed "Eyespeed" feature is mentioned. We will definitely know more about this card in the weeks to come.

Woohoo a REAL 6870 thread lol. (Hopefully).

For once, I like the look of the shroud. Very nice matte effect.

Looks like any other graphics card to me. Dual slot, plastic case and a fan. It's performance and price I'm interested in.

Thanks for the link though :)

naming barts as the 6870 is a complete fail by ati, slower than the 5870 from early leaks, what on earth were they thinking -_-

Hehe, just read this on another forum, the card does look dull and uninspiring mind, I was expecting a bit more of a 'Bling' looking card after all the hype.....

According to the link you have sent that is incorrect..

The 6870 and 6850 are both "Barts Pro", and 6800 "Barts XT"?

So the 6890 is "Barts XT"? If there is such a thing.

Interesting that it has 2 dp connectors. You would have thought that putting another dvi connector on it would have been more ideal but with the cheap adaptors available i suppose its not really needed.

So this is really the 6770? Or am I missing something? If it is surely it will be slower than the 5870, and the 6850 will be slower than the 5850. Doesn't make sense for AMD to name them like this.

Apparently, what we thought was going to be the 6770 will be branded the 6870 and what we thought was the 6870 will given the numbers 6970 but personally I think these reports are BS.

Yup, while the picture might be real, it could be the new 6770, or the new 6870, or one or the other named a different way around to what we know.

For all we know the 6770/6750 will be called caymans and the 6870/6850 will be called barts.

I didn't buy a 5850 because it would be faster than a 4850, I bought it because it was the best value card in the 5xxx series lineup and the cheapest of the fastest gpu segment.

I don't care if the same card is called a 4111, or a 6999, as long as naming structure WITHIN the 6xxx series makes sense, ie a 6870 is faster than a 6770 which is faster than a 6670, which is faster than a 6470, etc then I really don't know how anyone will get confused.

I didn't have an issue realising a 960 Phenom 2 is faster than a 9600 phenom 1. I also didn't have a problem getting a 960 was faster than a 920 P2, and that a 970(if it turns up) will be faster than the 960.

I still think, as Freddie, that the rumours are BS, theres very little reason for AMD to change the numbers up and condense them as is, but then just as many people for the past 3 months have decided a 6770 can't be that much faster because it's only a refresh of a 5770 and so at best 25% faster, because people don't seem capable of understanding a new 6770 would be significantly faster.

Basically people are complaining that the 6770 couldn't possible be "that" fast before when they thought it would be a 5770 replacement, and now they can't believe AMD would name it a 6870 and make it clear its much much faster than a 5770, can AMD win, not when one group of people is on their backs either way.
