A bunch of us here are having a debate on what is a couple, as in a couple of Smarties, not the couple as in people.

So, is a couple 2 or 2 to 4 generally?

Well generally:

Couple 1
Definition: That which joins or links two things together; a bond or tie; a coupler.

Couple 2
Definition: Two of the same kind connected or considered together; a pair; a brace.

Couple 3
Definition: A male and female associated together; esp., a man and woman who are married or betrothed.

Couple 4
Definition: See Couple-close.

Couple 5
Definition: One of the pairs of plates of two metals which compose a voltaic battery; called a voltaic couple or galvanic couple.

Couple 6
Definition: Two rotations, movements, etc., which are equal in amount but opposite in direction, and acting along parallel lines or around parallel axes.

Couple 7
Definition: To link or tie, as one thing to another; to connect or fasten together; to join.

Couple 8
Definition: To join in wedlock; to marry.

Couple 9
Definition: To come together as male and female; to copulate.

couple 10
Definition: a pair who associate with one another; "the engaged couple"; "an inseparable twosome"

couple 11
Definition: a pair of people who live together; "a married couple from Chicago"

couple 12
Definition: something joined by two equal and opposite forces that act along parallel lines

couple 13
Definition: two items of the same kind

couple 14
Definition: a small indefinite number; "he''s coming for a couple of days"

couple 15
Definition: bring two objects, ideas, or people together; "This fact is coupled to the other one"; "Matchmaker, can you match my daughter with a nice young man?"; "The student was paired with a partner for collaboration on the project"

couple 16
Definition: link together; "can we couple these proposals?"

couple 17
Definition: make love; "Birds mate in the Spring"

couple 18
Definition: form a pair or pairs; "The two old friends paired off"

But you knew that already. :p

Traditionally a couple is 2

Slang terms allow a couple to be 'a few' lol :D

If you asked me to pass you a couple of oranges, id pass you 2, if you asked for a couple of smarties id say NO MINE! .. ok ok no id tip the packet until a 'few' came out :D

The word few means more than one but not many.

Several means more than one.

The correct use of the word few is entirely dependent on context, for instance how many of whatever you're referring to you expect to see.
