Hey guys, going on from the comments in the League thread, I had an idea that i ran by Artheas just earlier today.

If you've watched 'The road to Socal regionals' you'll see that Wednesday night fights are featured, and i want to run something similar.

Basically, there are four stations, A, B, C and D.

Depending on the amount of people we have, (16 at OcUK including Kreeeee) we can break them down into groups of 4 per station.

So the top 4 players go into station A, the next best 4 into station B etc.

We'd set up an endless battle for each group and play a first to 10.

So the group finishes when someone wins 10, so the person with the lowest wins at that point gets demoted, and if you get 10 wins, you get promoted.

Eg, 4th place in station A, goes down to station B, winner of station B, gets promoted to station A etc

That way, you'll play people of your same level and improve gradually.

The top players will always be in groups A and B, with the weaker players mainly in C and D. But the benefit is that the weaker players will try their best to get into B as there will always be a top player in group B.

That way, the group C player will get group B experience and level up. This goes for everyone.

You'll want to stay in station A because the best players are there, and try your best not to get demoted, while the others will do their best and try to get into the higher stations.

When we play casuals, it's fun, but we don't really play our best, with a regular weekday to play in 'tournament mode' our games should improve drastically.

The only problem is finding a single day where we could do this regularly.

We could always make the groups bigger if we get more people involved.

What do you guys think?

Sounds great, but I think it will be difficult getting everyone online at the same time, on the same evening especially if its a regular thing every week. What happens if someone from group x doesnt sign on that evening?

Oi, why did you single me out?

Good idea, but I am working in Belfast on weekdays so no can do matey.

I was considering running "mic only" training sessions on Saturdays, as I don't get to play during the week.

I sent you an email in trust about this earlier Adz.

When people are unable to make it, we'll just re-do the groups with those that are able to play that evening.

The groups are dynamic, so say we have 16 players one week, we can do it as normal, but if only 12 can make it next week, we'll just split it into 3 groups of 4.

I'm not sure about penalizing people by demoting them if they miss a week, i guess we'll have to figure out something fair as people won't always have time to play.

Hopefully if it gets popular, people will make time to play in the weekly games as it's a great chance to level up our tournament play as we all don't play that serious in our casuals.

We'll just have to play it by ear.

For instance, say you miss a week.

In an ideal world we'll still have 15 players to take part.

We'll re-do the groups so that the top groups always have 4.

We'll still have the promotion and relegation, but when you return the week after, we're left with 5 in group A.

As we'll be keeping records, we can either keep it as a room of 5, or use other factors (amount of games won, winning percentage etc) to determine who should play in group B for that week. The player who was promoted from the week before gets to stay automatically.

We'll just have to see how it goes.

I'm definitely against penalizing players who can't make it. We'll just have to organize the groups in a way that's fair for all.

Essentially, if you get promoted, you stay promoted even if you miss the next week, same goes for if you get demoted.

More organised casuals, I'm always down for that.

I like that bit about giving away 800ms points to the winner of station A each week, rav, that's really kind of you! Nah just kidding.

If this happens to fall through due to commitment issues, organisational issues or whatever happens, I think it would be a good idea to schedule nights where it's a small endless lobby (say 5 max) with mics, and the topic of conversation should always revolve around getting better at the game. Questions like "what did I do wrong?" "How can I counter that?" should be so common that we only end up saying "1" as shorthand because everyone knows what question that means :P

That's how to get better, and we can't keep secrets from each other, just because someone doesn't know how to counter it, doesn't mean nobody does, then when you come across someone who knows how to counter it, you aren't prepared for how to counter their counter. (I'm sure someone can put that more eloquently than I just did. Hopefully you get what I meant)

Artheas' needlessly complicated idea:

Example of 16 players, 4 groups of 4.

Everyone has a points total.

D: 0
D: 0
D: 0
D: 0

C: 100
C: 100
C: 100
C: 100

B: 200
B: 200
B: 200
B: 200

A: 300
A: 300
A: 300
A: 300

Each week, you gain or lose points based on your position within the group.
1st: +60
2nd: +30
3rd: -30
4th: -60
(for a 4 person group)
(There is a minimum of 0 points in group D, and a maximum of 300 in group A.)

The following week, the players are sorted by points total, and broken up into groups again.
Those who can't make it during any week are deducted 25-50? points (wont necessarily drop down a group)

The points system can be tweaked for things such as..
increasing the cap in group A, so that if someone in group A wins every week, but has 1 bad week, they wont drop to B (crap idea imo).

No-one will need to deal with these numbers though, except Rav, who will be working things out each week with pen, paper, and abacus.

As for the difficulty of finding a night that suits everyone.. it's not possible! :(
Changing the day every week definitely won't work.
It's just a case of finding out which days are usually good for those who are interesting in leveling up! Then deciding on one.

While I like the idea, I am afraid I couldn't commit to it because of my job. I am generally living out of hotels during the week and even when I am supposed to be in London my work location suddenly changes to the Isle of Man or some other random place which is guarenteed to be not commutable from my home :p

Yep, I feel you.

I like Arts idea.

It doesn't just have to be confined to OcUK, if you guys have anyone on your friends list, they are more than welcome.

I think it would be good if we could set a date in our diary to have a launch night.

Like a couple of weeks from now so we can all make time and see how it works out.

That would be great mate.

We need regulars on this for it to really kick off, and i know that some of the guys here won't be able to make it every week.

Just invite away, the more the merrier!

Character diversity would be fantastic also. I've not played a good rufus in months, if anyone knows one, please get them in!
