Synology Users: DSM 3.1 now live

I have just installed this and get a warning that write caching has been disabled as I have HD204UI hard drives. It says to update the drive firmware and then I can re-enable it.

I already did the firmware update to the drives but not sure if it didn't work properly or else this is just a generic message that will warn users with these disks.

Anyone else get this?

Ringo, regarding your HD204UI drives. Did you update them one at a time in another machine/PC with data still on them?

I have the same drives but don't want to lose my data.

Thanks for response ringo.

Samsung,

Only re enable write caching if you have updated your firmware on the drives.

On occasions with the old version of DSM and old samsung firmware on those drives you could lose data. I guess they have implemented the "enable/disable write cache" feature as a precaution for those on the old drive firmware.

As for over wifi you should be fine, I've updated mine over the internet from work in the past :) I should imagine it does a consitency check on the update file before it does it anyway.
If you want to be as safe as possible do it via ethernet.

Will the diskstation not pick up that the new firmware has been installed? I know that the version number didn't change when doing the update so maybe the NAS software won't know either.

My F4 drives are unpatched and been running with write caching with no problems. I'm not going to chance it any longer though so tonight I'll update the firmware and then do the 3.1 update.

I suspect I've had no problems because I have been using a mirrored RAID and from what I've read most people suffering volume corruption have been using some sort of striped type config. Of course I may have just been lucky!

I noticed when I go to SMART info I saw I column labelled 'in the past'. I ran a few tests and then it disappeared. Disk status is normal.

Hopefully it will be fine.

I've just looked at my smart info, would be useful if anyone gets a chance could post theirs for comparison. Just did the "normal" smart test and both drives read as "normal"

Well it said it disabled write cache even though its never been enabled but both my drives are supposedly patched so re enabled it and so far so good. It updated a lot faster than i expected.
