Synology Users: DSM 3.1 now live

Ok i bought a DS211j today and 2 F4s from this week only.
Whats the best path forward for me to get everything updated before i start filling it up with data.

My main PC is filled to capacity with Hard drives and I really dont want to strip them all out to flash my firmwares but im guessing im going to have to. (my backup PC is so old its PATA)

Any advice for a NAS noob?

Download the latest DSM from the Synology website.

Check the firmware on the 2 disks. See the thread on HD204UIs in the hard disk forum.

Ask back for more info when that is done!

just read that thread on the F4s I've dpwnloaded your ISO (is the firmware on there upto date? and thanks for a very useful link) and it looks like ill be spending half of friday night pluging and unplugging hard drives.

Guess it gives me a good excuse to dust out my main rig I just hate playing with 5 internal drives some of which are raided and I also end up plugging them back wrong.

Hows the DS211j for dumping data from a USB drive? i assume it will be allot quicker than copying over the network. Can you add files on a USB drive to the Media share? could save me copying some data over is it does..

just check the manufacture date on the f4's, if it December 2010 or later firmware on them will be up to date all you need then is dsm 3.1

With regards to backing up, an external usb hard disk is about the quickest followed by over the network and then finally if you don't have an external disk then use a flash drive.

My experience so far with upgrading the Samsung 2TB F4's goes a bit like this:

One of the links I posted in this thread has details on where to get the firmware and how to go about the update. I went down the route of using FreeDOS. Basically you download a freedos iso, add the firmware update file to the image with an iso editor and burn it to a cd.

My drives were mirrored so both containing identical data I took the risk of not backing them up first. Pulled them both out the disk station and upgraded one. Put that back in the disk station and booted it just to check the data was there still before upgrading the next drive. Switched the diskstation off again and put the 2nd drive in.

Finally booted up to be greeted with a bad consistency check on the drives. For some reason one drive appeared to have lost its data or become corrupt. (this was possibly down to the fact that I booted up with a single drive first) Luckily all my data was still on the other drive and could still be accessed so I clicked repair. I had to erase the bad disk and then it automatically started the process of rebuilding the volume (Parity check). That took a few hours since there is about 1.5TB of data.

Finally I upgraded to the latest DSM firmware.

Don't worry that it will still warn you of the write cache problem. It will also automatically disable write caching. For some reason the drives don't report the new firmware version but don't worry it is there as long as you did the firmware upgrade following the instructions (it's pretty easy anyway).

Knowing my drives and DSM were then up to date I could then enable write caching again.

I have to say I never had any problems with the drives using the old firmware but many other people did so It's definitely worth doing. Since the upgrade all has been well too. I noticed my drives were not sleeping very often but then realised that SABnzbd which I run for usenet was actually waking the drives up now and again. I now shutdown sabnzbd when I'm not using it and the drives sleep properly.

Took 24 hrs to format and check 4tb of drive space. I know i didnt really have to check it but wanted to be safe.

Started copying data onto it now should all be on there by the end of the weekend!

Anybody know anything about adding a USB drive to the media share?
