Synology Users: DSM 3.1 now live

Does anyone know if it is possible to clear SMART history? My drive now says abnormal all the time due to a slow spin up time. It won't go away! The drive isn't slow to spin up every time. Can I not get this cleared?

Thanks for the heads up ringo....one thing i want to ask before i go ahead and update my DSM...i have about 1tb of data on my raid 1 config....im hoping that updating the DSM does not wipe the data off the hds??...ie i wont need to transfer my data over then do the update??

Thanks

With regards to the spin up error. Can you see in your SMART history what the current spin up time is?

Reading the synology forum it appears there may be a patch for spin up time. I was under the impression they had now included the patch with DSM 3.1 though.

Can anyone recommend the best drives to use in a DS211J? Or a suggested model version. The synology list is helpful but would prefer to have feedback here from users.

Been looking at the 1tb wd greens and the 1.5 tb seagate green?

Hey guys.

can anyone help me set-up my new disk station.

Basically I havw two drives in my NAS 1x 2tb i want to store all my media on and 1 x 200gb i want to set-up to hold things centrally like programmes and stuff to aid in resinatlling pc's

Im not the best when it comes to volumes and raid stuff... how can i set this up so both drives work seperatlet but can be access by all users?

So you have 3 drives altogether that you want to put into the NAS? I take it is a 4 bay drive?

If your drives are different sizes you will need to use Synology Hybrid RAID.

no just two drives

Im giving it a go to see if i understand so what i have done is created a volume for each disk using hybrid raid then i just create a share folder on each drive and give users permissions?

Sorry I read that as 2x1TB drive!

Yes you will need to use Synology Hybrid RAID I think. Then you could create two fileshares for the separate purposes i.e. media and programs.

I haven't done it but I think you could probably set up 2 separate volumes with just a single disk assigned to the volume. The synology setup wizard should be a good help.

Edit: Ignore the Hybrid RAID I think. Try creating two separate volumes if you want them separate. It's probably best to have one SHR RAID volume though - at least you will have RAID 1 protection.

K looks like that worked...

how do i set-up so that users dont require a username and password to be entered to access the nas? when double click on the nas icon under network places it asks for username and password?

When I built up my 211j I decided to play it 100% safe and go for recommended drives.
I also didn't want to go for drives that had to be a particular firmware revision - I just knew the ones I bought wouldn't be right etc.
So in the end I went for:

2x Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST32000542AS)

Sure, not the cheapest 2TB drives, but on the recommended list and they have been working just fine.
