This is my first pc build so bare with me.

At first i had 2 pc's one that was blue screened, one that needed a different Ethernet card as it had the old dial up card in it. so i stripped these and just salvaged the fans, But i also have parts of these etc.

I then paid £40 for a hp pavilion f1723 also came with the keyboard, mice, screen.

But i stripped that pc as i was awful slow, took 30mins to load up and get the internet up.

So i was sick of having slow pc's and wanted a fast one, and the price that pc world charges i don't think so, so i have decided to build my own.

I am on some sort of budget but it's not that bad, (Whatever i feel it's worth sort of thing)

It will be a slow build as and when i get funds to buy parts.

Spec:

  • Asus p5kpl-Am Epu
    Intel Pentium 4 3.00 GHz
Ram is 2gb i think not sure, (But i want to upgrade to 4GB the max it will take)
    Alpine Psu 700W
Asus EAH4350 SILENT CARD ( Im thinking of re-selling this as i want a better card that was discussed in the other thread)
Not sure on the cpu cooler maybe the people of OCuK Could tell me :D

Case not decided yet, but needs to be cheap and accept 6 fans and be a gaming case, Been looking on ebay.co.uk mostly.

Been looking at western didgital hard drives, but i lost out on it.

Also The ram i lost out on :(

optical drives are Ide ones, so im after sata hard drives.

Need to get some thermal paste

i used to have the exact same asus p5kpl mobo, was a decent little board, should make an ok starter pc, but dont expect miracles with that processor, maybe save up a bit and try and get yourself a cheap used dual core processor.

I only need to browse the internet, list stuff on ebay, maybe go on world of warcraft or miniclip etc and youtube, and watch films?

what other stuff could i upgrade to do all this as i wanted then??

Yeah i just wanted to see if it was worth anything and stick that board and graphics card on ebay as i still have the instrunction manual for that as well.

if your finding things sluggish and slow to load/boot up then an SSD for your main programs should help. dont bother with the expensive SATA 6GB/s ones, just the cheaper early ones will do like the OCZ vertex 2E's.

i'd be very surprised if someone wanted it for a replacement computer, but someone might be looking for that exact make/model of motherboard or graphics card or whatever to replace a broken one

The other 3 pcs as mentioned where slow which is why im building one, I have the hard drives from them one is a maxtor 80gb, seagate 40gb, western digital 40gb, These use the IDE cable.

that would be one reason why its slow, especially for boot up.

you might want to remove the ebay link and just list the case name and price because i'm pretty sure ebay is counted as a competitor.

one thing i have found is the same make model of case on the case maker's website going for a little bit less.

not sure about ebay delivery, but this site delivers the case to the UK for £3.99

If your still looking for a cheap case a coolermaster 430 elite will serve you well,Im not sure what your budget is?But its worth taking a look

STOP! Ditch that alpine psu IMMEDIATELY!
I had a 500W in my pentium 4 machine and all did not end well, stay well away.
seconded. just had a look around and that PSU is being sold for £20 pretty much everywhere. a 700W PSU for £20 is going to blow up and kill all the comonents with it. i also remember someone else with the exact same PSU coming here very recently and the same advice being given

heres a couple of reviews of 'no brand' cheap PSU's:

now theres a good thought. while your at it, heres a little bundle that will save you a bunch of money:

coolermaster elite 342 + Elite power 500W PSU £64.99

the PSU isnt amazing, but its still miles ahead of the alpine and will be perfect for your little build

Really because i did test it and it ran good?? Could you explain more on what happened?

I bought the PSU for £15, within a week into using, I started smelling smoke and the fan stopped working, and the system would not start, luckily my system was not damaged, I knew nothing about psu's till last month.

that 700w psu only gives out 300w at best, I suggest you get a 500w lepa as I did from overclockers for £30 which is far superior and can power a gaming build, its also an enermax brand.

AH ok then, well should i stick it on ebay and get rid, and get something else, Budget is propably £25-£40 at a push! for a diff psu
