First Build! :D

found this ??

Kingston 4gb 800mhzPC2-6400 DDR2 Memory Non-ECC 240 pin

13.50 so far includes p&p??

£41.89 altogether for the lepa 500w

where the hell have you found 4GB DDR2 for £13.50? on the bay?
*edit* just seen it and if its still under £30 its still a bargain!
and if your paying £41.89 incl delivery you could be getting a better psu elsewhere with free/less delivery
as for the case, get a windowed coolermaster 430 on the internet for £35 incl. delivery, great case from what I've heard.

Elite 500W Power Supply - OEM RS500-PSARJ3-UK
google that, more than enough to power your system, £25 incl delivery, so copy and paste google it. Decent psu, not on par with the lepa but won't explode and good quality.

I will get that over the next few days or so then and the case.

What cpu to get??

What graphics card??

DEFINITELY replace that CPU!! You can pick up a cheap dual core for £15-£20. It's much faster than the Pentium 4 and it won't run anywhere near as hot either! :)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz (1066MHz FSB), 2MB L2 Cache, Socket LGA 775 CPU.

Will that be ok??

Just asking again if i max out the ram on the board, put in a core 2 duo or quad core, 500gb hard drive, will this be ok for playing online games, sims 2 and basic stuff, watching films, ebay etc???

Yup that sounds good, your machine will be very good for a budget build! :D I built a budget E2160 machine with 2GB of RAM to upgrade my mums ageing Athlon 64. It's a brilliant machine and it only cost £80 (of which the motherboard cost the most as it was brand new :p)

Core 2 chips still have lots of life left in them! Games shouldn't be much of an issue and you'll still get good frame rates. Not sure of the overclocking but you should be able to get a lot of speed out of the chip. When testing in my board my mums budget 1.8GHz E2160 hit 3.2Ghz without issue!

Yes, mate. The Core 2 family of CPUs is two generations or so ahead of your P4. A dual core should be plenty for your needs (online and basic gaming, day-to-day use, web and multimedia), but the quad Q6600 is probably the maximum upgrade for that socket which delivers value for money. Your other upgrade options are also sensible for their intended use.

I would however advise against an Alpine PSU for the long term: they are cheap, but cut too many corners in terms of stability, electrical safety and current control. They are also known to never deliver their stated wattage and have very little current on the 12v rail (for a modern PSU), which may become an issue if you want to upgrade the GPU or reuse the PSU to power a more advanced system in the future.

Even something like these two would be an improvement:

Beyond that it would be a matter of going up to a current gen platform, which is not something that's on the cards atm, if I understood your original post correctly?

It would help if you posted at least a rough ballpark figure for your build budget, and regardless of how low or high it may be, there will be plenty of people here that can point you in the right direction to get the most out of that money.

Update:

Since you are going down the second hand route, I thought it may be worth point out this GPU:

For the money, it will make a better budget multimedia/vintage gaming card, unless you are set on passive cooling. In which case, this AMD option is worth a shout and is brand new:
