As a PC gamer myself, I am fairly certain that I know the outcome, but I would appreciate our forum community feedback on this matter.

Very soon I am looking to implement a system for our PC games sales which allows us to provide a customer with the activation code from a steamworks [initially] and origin [at a later date] game to activate on their online account.

This will mean that all pre-orders arrive with the customer before release day and you should in theory be able to buy codes at a better price than the digital distribution channels.

code distribution would be automatic and the codes would come direct from a retail boxed package

what are your thoughts?

Do people still get physical media shipped out? The code would be handy to get games as soon as theyre out but the physical discs always handy if you don't want to be downloading multiple gigs.

no one will buy them because they will be overpriced

thanks for your insightful post.

personally I go for physical if I can as generally a retail boxed copy of a game is cheaper than steam/origin

but I tend to throw away the box and just use the code on my account.

Would be very nice to preorder from here and have the code ready to activate on Steam/Origin so that we could preload if we wanted to.

I do still like to have the box for some games though. Skyrim for example.

I've always preferred to buy and download the games. You need to make sure that the games are at a real competitive price, not the usual crap you already try and put them at.

If you get it right then you'd have a definite buyer! :)

lol this is weird :confused:was thinking this earlier no bs . was thinking of buying rage from ocuk and was gunna be cheeky and see if could send me code first :p

i myself would buy from here if the messages were almost instant and reliable and the price better than steam or origin.

if its not then there is no point in doing any of this as you would just buy from them two

I find that now I like to download them, it was nice having all the shiny boxes but that just takes up space. However I think digitally distributed games should be cheaper, not sure how that'd work in this case seeing as you're getting codes from a retail box and not shipping them out... May as well ship the boxes out with slow mail after sending the code.

I always prefer the retail box.

Not only for the fuzzy satisfaction of a pile of games (die hard from ye olde days lol) - but also because installing from disc (even when an activation code is required) is SO much faster than downloading in many instances.

Depends on the game and the interface.

Steam is the only platform I feel comfortable buying a game from where I don't get the retail box.

Call me old fashioned :p

I answered - Retail box.

I installed rage in about 20 mins, far better than dloading 21 gigs

3rd option needed, buy game, get key in email, get disc by 1st class post.

I see what you are saying, unfortunately the way the system works is that once a code is issued, it shows as being shipped. This means that we would not be able to generate an order for the retail box product afterwards.

I will look into it now to see if there is a way round it.

our recent game releases have all been at a better price than digital distro and in many cases better than other online retailers.
I am trying to find out if others see getting the code early as an advantage mainly.

Most of the time i would just want the code and not be bothered at all about the retail box, for some games i definitely still want the box though. Of the game this year i have only bought the retail version of The Witcher 2, all others i bought a digital downlaod version.

Arkham City, Deus Ex, Battlefield 3, Rage, Assassin's Creed Revelations, all these games i'm not bothered about the box. However, with Skyrim for some reason i have to have the full retail boxed version(even though i will still probably link it to steam)
