Three people are confirmed dead after a cruise ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground off Italy.

The Costa Concordia hit a sandbar on Friday evening near the island of Giglio and listed about 20 degrees, after which people tried to reach land in lifeboats or by swimming.

Rescue teams have been going from cabin to cabin, searching for survivors.
Italians, Germans, French and British were among the 3,200 passengers. There were also 1,000 crew on board.

Helicopters evacuated the last 50 people on the deck who were in a "worsening" situation.

Three people were confirmed dead, Italian coast guard officials said on Saturday morning - fewer than the six or eight deaths reported by Italian media earlier.

Who would believe that in this day and age one of these very modern mega cruise ships (2006) with all its technology could come so close to a complete disaster.

What a tragic loss of life. Its only a small comfort that the death toll wasnt higher.

Do you think they'll be able to salvage her? It is only partially submerged.

I really don't know. She's a monster:

Tonnage: 114,500 GT
Length: 950 ft (290 m)
Beam: 118 ft (36 m)
Speed: service: 21.5 knots (39.8 km/h; 24.7 mph)
maximum: 23 knots (43 km/h; 26 mph)
Capacity: 3,700 passengers
Crew: 1,100

I suppose it's possible. I bet the insurers will make sure they have a very good go at re-floating her.

Absolutely incredible that a modern cruise liner could run aground like this.

Whoever was on watch will no doubt be in serious ****.

Very sad at the loss of life, as Craig said, it's a small mercy that the death toll wasn't higher.

From the news reports, it sounds as though some people who couldn't get into the lifeboats jumped and subsequently drowned on their swim to shore.

I've always been taught that you should only ever leave the boat if you have to step-up off it.

It definitely makes you think about lifeboat provision though... surely the davits have a mechanism to overcome the list of the ship (on both sides)?

The figures quoted on the news this morning are around £400m for the ship, I think you're right, they'll definitely try to salvage it as far as is possible.

It does make you wonder but at the same time there will always be the potential for risks that you can't foresee or that are reasonably practicable to mitigate against. I don't know enough in this instance to say whether the list of the ship was so extreme as to be beyond the normal bounds of probability/design but it is a possibility.

For three people to lose their lives in such a way is a minor tragedy, from the pictures it's remarkably close to the shore.

My understanding was that the ship had already hit a reef and begun to list, there's a 30m hole in the hull that can be seen now the ship has toppled. The captain decided to try to put her into the harbour but she grounded on the sandbar whilst trying to make port. I cant see how a sandbar could cause the damage to the hull.
