After ten years in the making the space sim Wing Commander series’ Universe, designed by Origin Systems, will hopefully see a new title emerge. In Wing Command Saga (a fan production project), you will again fight the Kilrathi at the same time as WC3 and now conclude with the end of the decades long Terran-Kilrathi War.

WCS uses the Freespace 2? engine, which source code has been released to the public. WCS modified and enhanced it for its purposes. The devs stated that this was all perfectly legal :) “Yes, it is completely legal. The Freespace 2 engine’s source code has been released to the public sector, and Wing Commander Saga uses a modified and enhanced version of it. We have made every effort to ensure that all aspects of this mod are completely legal ~ Wing Commander Saga”.

The devs have released a feature preview trailer and announced the release date for March 22, 2012. The game will be released for the Windows PC, Linux and Mac

Heh, this is interesting... I just happened to be watching an LP of Wing Commander 4 when I found this thread. Let's hope the extra stuff like voice-overs are well done.

At long last, the day has finally arrived! It has been ten years to the day that the Wing Commander Saga project was officially founded. Through this time, Saga has evolved through a host of iterations, with sometimes frustrating twists and turns and several brick walls. However, we believe that Wing Commander Saga would not be what it is today without the lessons we have learned from each one of those experiences, and we are very excited to finally share the results with you.

On many occasions, we have referred to Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn as a labor of love. That is truly what it has been for us. Many years ago, Chris Roberts and his team at Origin ignited our imaginations with their innovative, blockbuster Wing Commander series. Our hope has always been that with Wing Commander Saga, we could recapture that excitement and magic to some degree and share it with all of you. Our ten year development process has certainly taught us even more respect for just how innovative and brilliant Chris Roberts and his team are. Our development of Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn is meant as an homage to them and what they achieved, and we would like to thank them and EA, who holds the intellectual property for Wing Commander. We would also like to thank all the sites who have generously offered to provide mirrors for Saga.

If Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn is your introduction to the Wing Commander universe, you owe it to yourself to try the source material that inspired us. Several of the original Wing Commander games are available at gog.com, so make sure to show your support for the actual creators of Wing Commander by going and purchasing some copies! You won’t regret it. Especially make sure to pick up a copy of Wing Commander III, since the story of Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn was written to coincide with the events of that game.

Today we are only launching the PC vesion. The Linux and Mac versions will be available soon. We just need to port the launcher to OSX and Linux and run some tests.
For help troubleshooting known issues click here to visit our forums. We’d also love to here your thoughts about the game, so feel free to join us there!
So, without further ado, we are pleased to present you with Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn. It’s humanity’s most desperate hour, a desperate struggle for survival against impossible odds, and you’ve got a front row seat.

Wing commander was such a good series. Wing commander prophecy blew my mind back in the day.

I don't think I've every played a Wing Commander game that didn't blow my mind. I remember reading a games back back in the early 90's and seeing a preview for Wing Commander 3 and I was gob smacked by the graphics and how good it looked and was the main reason why I wanted a PC. Some 4 years latter I got my opportunity and it was just as good as I had imagined. I think I played the first game on my Amgia 1200.

BTW I have a very rare game. Wing Commander 4 on DVD, it cost me a lot of money but it was well worth it. Can't wait to give this fan based game a try, I played one before but I was a bit underwhelmed by it.

I've got Wing Commander 4 on 6 CDs, not sure it ever came on DVD.
Sadly, when I picked it up it was missing all the really decent goodies (Big box, manuals), and so it's worth peanuts :(

Far too many big box games, I keep on intending to build a shelf unit next to the desk to hold them all. Memories......
If you want rare, I've got the original big boxed versions of Alpha Centauri, Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire and Alpha Centauri: Planetary Pack (The previous two bundled). The Alien Crossfire separate is almost as rare as they get :o

There was a double-sided DVD version with better FMV quality (no scanlines, Dolby surround audio), was only sold with DVD decoder cards. A fan patch allows it to work in Windows XP without problems, don't know about Vista or 7.
