upgrading from HD7850 budget 250 max

Definitely not the 970 for that much :) a 1060 6gb or RX480, I don't think you can go wrong with either. The 1060 is faster overall at the moment but the RX480 has better DX12 and Vulkan support so will close the gap and maybe overtake in the future.

Hmm looks like I was in the right ball park with my guesses. Thanks for the 970 tip so between the 480 and 1060.

Really tempted by the 1060 ..

decisions decisions.... I think i'll sleep on it and read more reviews... :p

What likes the noise from the 480?

If you were to get a 1060, I would recommend:

This is by far the best 1060 for the money. Is a small card, but is very good. Often beating much larger cards in thermal performance/noise/overclock etc. Also, EVGA is renowned for having the very best customer service of any GPU brand, so that's a great positive for the card.

If you were to get a 480:

Over clocks very well, and is one of the very best cards for temperatures and noise. However, the short warranty might put you off.

Again this card runs quiet and cool, but overclocks slightly worse than the HIS card linked above. It does however have a slightly better 3 year warranty, and perhaps comes from a more well-known company (XFX) which might result in better customer service.

A further thing to consider is which games you currently play/intend to play. Certain games favor each card a lot at present. For example, Doom is a lot stronger on the 480, as is Hitman. However, overall most games favor the 1060. It depends on the game a lot and so it pays to match each card to your games if you can.

My son plays overwatch mostly.

I'm sure we'll be getting FIFA 17 and I like a bit of WoW and GTA V.

Wouldn't mind getting battlefield as well.

thanks for the recommendations on the cards.

I currently have the ICEQ 7850 great card and still running smooth.

Now onto the mechinical keyboard forum as I need a qwerty.... :p

480 means you won't have to mess about with driver deletion etc if you've already got he 7850.#

1060 is a clean install and driver sweeper time :D

You should do a clean reinstall regardless, too much potential for issues otherwise. My recommendation: PowerColor Devil 480. Quiet, cool, great pcb. 10/10 card

Honestly I'd go with the 480 - its gain a ton of ground in Dx11 - faster in DX 12 and its only going to get faster and age a lot better than 1060......

Looks like you keep your cards for while - plus bonus you get for Battlefield 1 with the 480....

Sounds like you've already chosen another card than the one you linked but although the Nitro cooler is pretty much silent when playing things like Fifa and SWTOR but it sounds like a hoover when i fire up The Witcher 3.

In your budget I'd go 8 gb 480 or 6 gb 1060.

I wouldn't touch a 970 and I wouldn't bother with Asus either, Companies like Sapphire for AMD and EVGA for Nvidia do just as well or even better than Asus.

I'd be looking at one of these but probably the 480.

Do you have a link for the 480 recently gaining performance in dx11 games?

Cheers.

or look on ebay, 980 classified for £260, get the core to 1500mhz on that and it'll blow past any rx480 and it's EVGA so will have transferable warranty. I had my old 980 to 1575mhz and 600mhz on the memory and was 92% of my stock 980 Ti!

Thanks everyone.

When you talk about clean install do you mean windows or just the gfx drivers and software?
