upgrading from HD7850 budget 250 max

8gb is too much for a 480 as it'll run out of GPU power well before Vram

Not this again!

This is a topic that has been discussed again and again on this forum,

Newer console port games often demand more than 4 gb's of vram due to the high res textures that developer's use to maximise the visuals for the smallest performance hit possible,

Will some games want more than 4gb's of ram for max visuals? YES.

Do gpu's automatically run out of grunt before hitting the 4gb ram limit? NO. Not any more.

Is it an issue? Only if you make it into one (turning the textures down one setting reduces ram usage considerably for only a small visual hit).

I don't get why people choose to ignore the facts and give people bad out of date advice.

A 4gb card is fine but you will find games where you'll need to lower the texture setting to keep it within the available ram limit even though the performance is still good.
If you don't mind doing that then as I said a 4gb card is fine but don't buy a 4gb card and expect to be able to turn the textures too max..

I can't wait to get ordering just badgering the wife for clearance.

Was great to see a BSOD when my son was playing overwatch yesterday....

The end is nigh for this card. Not bad though it's lasted since 2012.

I think 4 years between upgrades is good going.

just checked and I only have 6 pin PCI-E power connectors.

Well seeing as you have a 7850 now, which is atleast 5 years old. Suggests you like to keep the cards a while. People reckon the nvidia cards are good for 2 years and start to be pushed out by nvidia. The AMD card should out last the nvidia one.

I've got a Nitro OC+ 480 8Gb so can't comment on the 1060.

1080P Ultra on pretty much everything for now. Not sure why but it's even running Forza Horizon 3 @ 4K 30fps Ultra settings. Wasn't expecting that but I'm certainly not complaining.

Does get a little bit noisy when playing The Witcher 3 @ 1080P max settings but you can set a custom fan profile to keep the noise down a little bit.

Think the 1060 6Gb and the 480 8Gb are much of a muchness for now, though people keep saying the 480 will have longer legs over time with updated drivers.

Will have to wait and see in regards to the above but I've no complaints at all with my 480.

I would avoid the Nitro+. Various reviews I have seen show it running quite hot and loud. Instead, I would go for

If I was looking for a 480, I would go for this one. It may look a bit ugly, but you never see the front of it when its actually in your case and it has a back plate anyway. Then again, I don't have a window case so performance trumps aesthetics for me.

HIS have always had terrible styling imo, My go to AMD brand has become Sapphire but after reading reviews the 480 Nitro doesn't sound that great so I'd go for an 8gb 480 PowerDevil if it was me.
