007 First Light

WAB hates everything anyway, he's in his old man cloud phase

Maybe it's a niche for a critic to be proudly out of touch with the market.

Long tirades about his personal hang ups and he has to sticky a comment that pretty much spells out that he's useless at recognising why it's popular (and rating well) because he's blinded by what he hates.

What a niche of haters to be catering to.

I'm on chapter 6. The combat is a bit clunky and the gunfights aren't the most thrilling, but I'm mostly along for the story. It's been entertaining and that's all that matters to me.

The two times I've gone in to actual shooting combat during the story have both been the worst parts of the game.

I think that's a hangover from the Hitman games, which also had uninteresting shooting - not that I ever really played those games in that way.

Not even sure what chapter I'm on. To be vague, We just escaped a ship.

Rolled the credits and enjoyed my playthrough. I think I'd give it a strong 7/10, but those who enjoy the cinematic side of games more would probably rate it higher - I feel that's its strength.

I didn't often find myself engaging with the stealth systems, as it felt straightforward (and quicker) to just go in fists/guns first most of the time. I didn't really use all the melee/shootout mechanics either, just didn't feel a need to. Combat is generally quite forgiving too - like even if you commit to a punch you can still cancel it into a dodge/parry immediately for example, and there's little to no sway/recoil to weapons etc.

The walkabout puzzle-like parts were the least enjoyable for me, but they kept me playing and those parts got better towards the end.

I did a few of the Tactical Sim missions, got to one where you would fail if you entered 'license to kill' mode which was actually quite refreshing - wouldn't have minded a little of that in the campaign tbh. Although, I think what holds the game back a bit for me is getting into combat not feeling dangerous enough, the stakes felt low, which reduced how engaging playing stealth could be.

Overall I think what they pulled off with First Light is impressive, and I feel with some refinements it could easily go from a good game to an excellent one for the sequel (which I hope they get a chance to do!).

Sounds like one to wait on for a sale or a few patches if the stealth is a bit fiddly. Shame if a Bond game nudges you toward going loud most of the time.

I wouldn't say it's fiddly. The stealth system seems solid enough, but enemies see you a bit more easily than in the average stealth adventure perhaps, often need to make good use of your tools/energy.

For me, it was more that there was little incentive to keep it stealthy, no reward for it or real repercussions for getting caught. I do see there are post-game challenges you can do to not get caught tho, and you can replay any part of any chapter individually to get straight to it, so that's cool.

Generally it's quite a polished game, there's not much that really needs patched imo. I imagine they'll add some new missions to the tactical simulator though, at least.

Now the endless and may I say pointlessly long training missions are out of the way I'm really enjoying it, although I'm a massive Hitman fan, so that's to be expected.
I've done the first 3 proper missions and the gameplay & graphics are on point, as is the story.
I'd have given it a 8/10 if it wasn't for this montrosity being in the game..

7/10 it is.
I'll definitely replay it with different strategies.

I think this tacsim mission demonstrates how I approached most of the encounters in the game (though I was rushing it a bit here)

Generally, the enemies don't naturally take cover and move predictably so it's fairly easy to line up shots. I think melee combat is a bit too forgiving aswell on hard. Both are still fun at least.

If these things were improved it would really elevate the game for me personally. I will say that after playing some of the sim missions etc the strengths of the game shine through a bit more, so I'd probably bump it to a ~8/10 now - for the replayabale too. I'll be keeping it installed to see what content they add for sure.

Would absolutely recommend it for anyone who feels it might be for them, IOI did some great stuff here for sure.
