0x10c - Mojang's New Game (INDIE)

I lost huge respect for him with the Yogscast incident, hilarious and just pathetic from someone of his stature.

The whole Yogscast incident was just the result of a big misunderstanding and ill-thinking from exhaustion. Although to be fair in this situation the blame has to be put on Mojang as a whole and not just Notch himself. Hopefully they can learn from their mistakes and there isn't another bad PR incident like this again.

The concept definitely sounds interesting, very ambitious!
not sure if i'm keen on the idea of a subscription, however i will reserve judgement until it has been released and we see what it has to offer.
definitely one i will be watching out for, it sounds like it has the potential to be pretty epic!

Ut oh. Terraria gained popularity so Notch added endgame and bosses to minecraft. Terraria crew start making a space sim. Notch starts making a space sim. I'm hoping this is just coincidence and hes not going to end up making a 3d version of the terraria crews new game.

Premise is interesting and we could always use a few more space games, would really rather player hosted servers though. Multiplayer was really the only reason I bought Minecraft.

Same, the premise sounds fantastic and I really hope it does well, but as with minecraft it will most likely be better in multiplayer. For me it will depend how the multiplayer is done, if its sort of mmo like where there are thousands of people per server that could be quite cool but if its only a small number of people on the server and without the possibility just to play with friends I could see it being very annoying with a lot of griefing.

Time will tell though its still very early days.

Notch is a nice guy, but as people have said, Minecraft was a once off.. he struck it extremely lucky.

As for future games, he'll always be limited as long as he uses Java. He'll be stuck making these small nimble games as that's what he is limited to.

He doesn't care, he's got enough money to do what he wants. He just enjoys writing games.

I'm not saying this will be a good game or it will be popular, but why do people think Minecraft was a one off? Or that he was 'lucky'? Or that 'anything else he makes won't be any good'?

Because it filled a niche which has since been spammed with clones. Its VERY hard to find a niche in gaming which is unexplored.

There were games of the same sort of genre. Games Notch to a lot of inspiration from it has to be said. But they were nowhere near as popular. Yes, you could play the 'lucky' card. Or you could say that he found the right mix. He saw something he enjoyed and made it so much better.

I don't know which it is. I just don't like how the 'anti-notch' crowd think they're superior than the 'pro-notch' crowd when really they're exactly the same.

I mean, Minecraft would have been nothing without Youtube but you know :p

Like a space MMO, heavy on gameplay and light on graphics? I bear no love for Notch, not being interested in minecraft at all and especially after the yogcast thing, but i do believe you make your own luck and he did. looking forward to this as something novel at the least, paying monthly i dont much care about as long as its worth paying monthly for.

I think he got 'lucky' but that's not to say it was a mistake or fluke that paid off, I think he identified something and created a very simple game to fill the void. He saw the potential for a very specific game and created it.

My problems with Notch arise when you look at his role in the development of the game. He's lazy and unprofessional too often for my liking. Jeb (who is now in charge of Minecraft) is doing a far better job with it then Notch was after the initial Aplha success.

People are welcome to be fans of Notch and his work, I'm quite a big Minecraft fan, but not of Notch per say, I don't think he's anything 'special' I do hope he proves me wrong and continues to create more good games.

He needs to move away from Java too, but maybe that's too difficult for him.

The pay monthly fee seems an easy money maker or rather an easy way to milk more money out of a product, Minecraft is hugely popular online and has a growing fan base, why wouldn't you want to get more money out of them?

There is a lack of good space-y games out there, so I hope this brings something new and fresh to the genre to be honest.
