Well, as i always do, im trying to decide which of these i should get as a first car.

There both preety similar specs and fuel consumption, both reasonable insurance prices...

but which one is quicker?

FIAT = fix it again tomorrow ;), Ford for reliability, not sure on the speeds, mpg etc, but if i was choosing id go ford tbh

It really depends on what engine you go for exactly. There are so many models. But just browsing on Parkers, the Fiesta is faster.

Personally I'd go for a clio and they are much cheaper on the insurance.

lol naughty i own a fiat have have 2 in my household, ive also owned 3 bravos now and i can tell you that saying about fiat is old hat hehe :D

fiat are reliable :)

just dont play with the electrics :P

fiesta by a mile. they are deceptively quick upto about 50 due to shortish gearing and the zetec lump is all aluminium, good engine. Plus you dont get the fiat reliability, parts are cheap as chips. My mate has an s reg one and its great, handle well too I think they are great for the money. insurance will be cheaper on a clio though. I'd get the fiesta if you are happy with the insurance quote.

by a mile

i would say 1.2 8v punto would be a marginally slower and 1.2 16v punto would possibly be a little quicker.

edit - reading your post i guess it 8v as it 75bhp

which one i would pick would depend on which mk of each we are comparing.

i didnt have much luck with my punto back when i had it many years ago. it was only a year old when i got it and i managed to get just about everything replaced on it in the 3 years i had it. :( so that would seriously put me off recommending it. (to be fair it was driven a bit too hard for a shopping run car)

Thats all i really wanted to know, as my girl friend has a Fiat Punto 1.2 75, and i dont want her beating me down the motorway or at the traffic lights :P

I got a 1.25 16v fiesta mk4 (p-reg) as a first car. I can't compare it to a punto, but I agree with it being quick up to around 50. After that, even with foot to the floor, it takes a while to get up to 70.

0-60 is 11.9s or something.

get the 1.2 16v punto sporting :)

great cars handle wifes has been reliable as hell 40k miles no faults bar needing plugs gapped. and a 1.2 16v punto sporting will whup the ford into next week :)

ps the mk2 punto sportings came with a 6 speed g/box too :) (although you can retrofit to the mk1 if you feel the urge)

What kind of performance mods could i do to it to get it down to 10 seconds or about 10s?

Fit another engine, lol seriously your looking at getting a 1.2 / 1.25 and your talking about performance before anything else, your looking at the wrong type of car my friend.

Until it falls into a big heap of its component parts, if you want something thats going to last you really need the fiesta.

hey the punto sporting has none too bad performance :) does 0-60 in 10 seconds and a top whack of 118

ps thats the 1.2 16v 85 bhp version for those not in the know

and you base your point on what?

i'm lucky enough to be in the position where i can make the comparison with the other half having owned both cars :)

the ford maybe a bit more solid but its certainly not going to last any longer,

the punto's fully galvanised just like its ford counterpart mechanically sound (probably more so than the ford, oh and in terms of performance/pound the punto wins hands down
