Has anyone heard when manufacturer's plan to be releasing the next set of hard drives beyond 1TB?
As the last jump was from 750GB to 1TB I am guessing they will be 1.3-1.4TB in size? :)

The main reason is that I want a proper 1TB partition for storage, and a 200-300gb partition for Windows and programs (in RAID1 of course ;) )

The 1TB drives haven't been out for long so I think 'a while' is about as good as you're going to get.

Mmm, i'd be interested too. I've looked around on Google and i know the 1Tb HDDs are starting to go on the market very soon (Or are they on sale in certain places of the world?).

Semi: I may be thinking in the same as Vai in that i'd rather have everything on one single drive so i would have space to expand later on. Plus noise levels would be affected with 4 disks as opposed to a single one surely?

I heart you Vai. <3

It'd probably work out cheaper having 4 drives, 2x320gb and 2x1tb with one of each mirroring the other in Raid1 than going for 2x 1.3tb drives. :)

A good point, however 4 drives would be noisier than 2 and I am trying to go super quiet in future builds.
Plus with two 1TB drives I would always look at the 931gb that shows in Windows and think in disappointment "almost but not quite 1tb" :p

I was afraid it would be the case, I guess we are looking at sometime in 2008 rather than late this year then?

Noise levels might well be greater as the more moving components you put in the more likely it is that one or all will make a noise or create some form of vibration.

It might be neater having everything on one drive and it does give more space for expansion but then again it does also render you more liable to suffer if a catastrophic failure occurs. I know Raid1 goes some way to preventing it. You will still be paying a pretty hefty price premium for the 2x 1.3tb drive over 2x 1tb and 2x320gb if current prices for 1tb are anything to go by.

Let me put it this way, the difference between the 1tb drive and the 750gb drive (as the next model down) is around £75, you can get a 500gb drive with the saving based on that difference in price. Or you could get the 320gb and a caddy/drive suspension to minimise drive noise for the same sort of money. I'm only guessing but I expect the price differential between the top of the line and second will stay much the same.

I don't think we'll see anything above 1TB for a while. A lot of the manufacturers have moved on to hybrid technology for faster speeds rather than go for capacity. Other vendors are waiting to see how the 750GB and 1TB drives are just in case they have issues.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a 750GB+ drive in case it went wrong. It's bad enough worrying about losing 250GB. I'd just opt for an external RAID solution.

yes hitachi drives are available at a competitor and available to pre-order with ocuk (much cheaper with ocuk)

We can get the 1TBs already but they are considerably more expensive. From the other thread, it has proved more popular to wait for the cheaper drives.
