lo, well ive been running for about 7 weeks now and ive got my 1.5 mile run time down from not being able to run that far to 16 mins then today i did just under 13 mins. Ive got a interview for my army selection 2 day assessment in a week and then after that ill have about 3 - 4 weeks untill i go to catterick. On the 2 day assesment ill be expected to run 1.5 miles in 10.5 mins. i run every day and i can feel myself improving im just wondering tho will i be able to get my time down from 13 mins to 10.5 in a month or there abouts ?

regards,
Andy

I would think its possible.

A guy at work started running 3 months ago. At first he couldn't run more than a mile. Yesterday he ran 10 Miles, then 7 miles this morning and 3.6 Miles after work in a time of 23 minutes.

Crack on and get your 1.5 miles below 10 mins :)

Don't train by JUST running 1.5miles, train by running a lot further
Mainly because if you get in, you will regret training for only 1.5 miles like i did, its horrible.

You want to do two types of training in one session

warm up having a jog for 5 mins do some streches and drink a bit of water.

1... run as fast as you can for 7 mins. Now you should be aiming for 1 mile in 6.30mins any less than 1 mile per 7 mins = fail.

Have a 5 min rest and drink some water.

2... run for 45mins non stop at a pace a little slower than no1.

You definitiely don't want to be running everyday!

With respect, if the OP could do 2 (even at his current pace) he'd not be worrying about his 1.5 mile time.

I found when I was training up for my basic that cross running really helps, you basically run fast for one minute, then jog for another, then run fast and jog again ... this way you work your cardio system for longer than if you just went for a straight fast run. Of course you should use this alongside timed runs and fartlek training, but it is perfectably capable. Good luck with the rest of your training :)

I dont do much running anymore but when I was about 8 I remember doing a fun run (yes I know) in under 25 minutes and that was 3 miles.

Surely you can run quicker than a 8 year old :D

That's plenty of time to get ready.

Like you I started not being able to run over a mile non stop about 6-7 weeks ago, but I have a pretty savage fitness goal so I've been running a convenient loop of uphill/downhill roads around where I live which is aprox.3.5m, twice a day. But I'm also mixing in days where I just do sets of hill sprints up a steep hill where I live, and stuff like biking (most recently) but also swimming and incorporating periods of sprinting into my usual run circuits.
My point is, and as other people have said, if your just grinding out 1.5 miles a day and doing it at a pace of 13 minutes - it's going to take you forever to improve.

You really need to be running 3 miles anyway mate. The actual test is a 1.5 mile 'warm-up' followed by a 1.5 mile personal best. It's the personal best that has to be under 10.5mins.

I've always aimed for 9mins 30sec because that was the limit to get into the Paras. When I got it down to 8mins 45sec I kinda got bored and stopped running because I'd reached my goal...

10.5mins should be easily achievable though mate - I was able to shave off 30 seconds a day every day for the first week when I was doing it. It get's harder after that but you've just got to push yourself, eat and sleep correctly.

Good luck with the selection.

ty every one for help i think ill start running a abit further but i know for a fact its 100meters warmup then 1.5 miles. you may be thinking of the royal marines where you do 1.5 miles in 11.5 mins then another 1.5 miles in under 10 min.

also yes i know that after selection you have to run 3+ miles but mileage has never been my downfall speed has :D

I think you have confused miles with Km's as 5:38 sounds about right for 1.5km.... If it was miles you be record holder lol.

I think you've read the post wrong, he's only claiming 5:38 for 1 mile. Also 1.5km is only 100m shy of a mile.

And 5:38 for a mile is nippy but not exceptional. I can knock out a series of 4x5:40 min miles during an interval session.

Ah right, didn't realise it was a 100m warm-up for the infantry - thought everyone had to do a 1.5 mile warm up. Just think though - if you did a 1.5 mile warm-up and then 1.5 personal best while you're training, you'd easily be able to beast out a 100m warm-up + 1.5 mile personal best.

That's how I'd look at it.

When I joined the Royal Signals we did one 1.5 Mile Warmup with the pace of the slowest man, then we did the proper 1.5 mile one straight after, not uncommon to do that in your selection no matter the regiment.

First you will warm up with a run and walk in a squad (as a group) for 6 minutes over a distance of 8 hundred metres. This is then followed immediately by a timed 'best effort' (individual) run over a measured distance of 2.4 km (1 1/2 miles). The course will be on level ground and on a good running surface.

The required time will depend on what job you have applied for.

Level 1
Run time 12.45
Infantry
Pioneers

Level 2
Run time 13.15
Royal Artillery
Royal Armoured Corps
Royal Engineers
Household Cavalry

Level 3
Run time 14.00
All other Arms and Corps
